How to tan faster?

For those wishing to achieve a sun-kissed complexion quickly, there are a few tricks to prepare the skin and speed up the tanning process. However, it is better to exercise patience to avoid damaging the skin. Here are some of our practical tips for tanning quickly in a skin-friendly manner.

Exfoliating one's skin to facilitate tanning.

The first good practice to adopt is to prepare your skin for optimal tanning before any sun exposure. It is recommended to exfoliate your skin a few days before exposure in order to refine your skin texture by removing dead cells on the surface and allow for a more uniform result.

Exfoliation should be done about once or twice a week. To facilitate tanning, it should be carried out approximately 3 days before sunbathing. However, exfoliating the day before sun exposure may weaken the skin and increase the likelihood of sunburn.

The use of a sun care product.

Contrary to popular belief, sun care products do not hinder tanning. On the contrary, the skin cannot achieve a beautiful, lasting tan if it is not protected. Therefore, avoid skipping the sunscreen in an attempt to speed up the tanning process. You are exposing your skin to the risk of burning and sunburn. Indeed, your skin will turn red and peel instead of acquiring a lovely tanned hue.

Sun care products are now available in several forms: spray, cream, stick, oil... Some are also considered as tanning treatments. Indeed, in addition to containing protective sun filters, these formulations also include self-tanning active ingredients. They often also contain ingredients rich in carotenoids, capable of stimulating the synthesis of melanin, such as carrot macerate or vitamin E.

Note: before sunbathing, it is advised not to apply skincare products containing olive oil or sunflower oil on the skin. These oils do not protect against UV rays and may even promote burns.

The application of a self-tanning product.

The optimal solution for achieving a sun-kissed complexion in a few hours without exposing oneself to the drawbacks of the sun is the application of a self-tanner. Indeed, this type of product allows one to avoid the sun's rays without having to give up sporting a coloured skin. It is important to remember that high exposure to UV rays leads to an increase in free radicals within the body. These are unstable molecules that target and damage DNA, cell membranes, and certain proteins. UV rays are, among other things, responsible for sunburn, hyperpigmentation, photoaging, and also more serious problems, such as skin cancers.

Self-tanning products come in various forms (mousse, cream, lotion, gel...) and are applied directly to the skin. They typically contain dihydroxyacetone (DHA), a molecule that reacts with the amino acids in the stratum corneum through the Maillard reaction to form melanoidin , a brown pigment. At Typology, we have formulated two treatments that provide a natural and gradual tan: a self-tanning serum for the face and a self-tanning gel for the body.

Note : there are also self-tanning showers. In a specialised booth, fine droplets of a self-tanning lotion are sprayed onto the body and/or face. This is a fairly convenient and quick technique (less than ten minutes if a machine is used) offering a uniform result. However, one might question the risk of inhaling DHA. Indeed, the ingestion or inhalation of this molecule could potentially lead to asthma, lung diseases or cancer. To date, no health authority has established that self-tanning showers pose a health risk, due to the short exposure time to the product.

Intensely hydrate your skin to protect it.

A dehydrated skin is more sensitive to the UV rays of the sun. However, this does not mean it will tan faster. Dehydration increases the risk of the skin starting to peel or suffering from sunburn. Thus, instead of a nice tan, the skin would flake and become irritated. From a biological perspective, dehydrated skin is characterised by a weakened hydrolipidic film . Present on the surface of the epidermis, its function is to protect it from external factors but also to limit water loss. To strengthen it, it is recommended to hydrate sufficiently by drinking about 1.5 L of water per day, but also to apply a moisturising cream , especially if you are going to expose yourself to the sun.

Thus, choose a moisturising cream according to your skin type and apply it daily, morning and evening. For the face, you can use our face moisturising cream with 9 ingredients. Enriched with hyaluronic acid (INCI: Sodium Hyaluronate) and coconut oil (INCI: Cocos Nucifera (Coconut) Oil), it is a minimalist formula that hydrates and nourishes the epidermis. Its light and non-greasy texture is suitable for dry, normal and combination skin, even sensitive ones. For the body, prefer our body moisturising cream with 10 ingredients, which hydrates all skin types.

Maintaining a healthy diet.

A sun-kissed complexion is not solely dependent on sun exposure but also on your diet. Indeed, the consumption of certain foods, rich in specific nutrients, can accelerate the melanogenesis process, that is, the production of melanin. Therefore, do not hesitate to incorporate ingredients rich in beta-carotenes into your meals.

From a biological perspective, beta-carotene is converted into retinol, the active form of vitamin A, in the intestinal lining. Notably, the presence of retinol in the blood stimulates the synthesis of melanin. Therefore, regular consumption of carrots, tomatoes, peppers, mangoes, peaches, or apricots promotes tanning and a healthy complexion.

You can also turn to dietary supplements rich in beta-carotenes. They have the advantage of containing a higher concentration of beta-carotenes than traditional foods, which accelerates tanning. To optimise their effects, it is advised to start the course about a month before a sunny holiday. It can be continued upon return to prolong the tan. Note that the ideal duration of a course is generally three months.

Applying plant-based oils.

Some vegetable oils with a slight colour immediately provide a natural, light tan. This is particularly true for carrot macerate, which has a high content of vitamin A and carotenoids. This oil is also an excellent antioxidant, providing protection for the skin against free radicals. Furthermore, carrot macerate influences the process of melanogenesis.

Another vegetable oil recommended for quick tanning is theBuriti oil. Extracted through cold pressing, it is rich in carotenoids and also stimulates the production of melanin. This oil also possesses antioxidant and photoprotective properties. The carrot macerate or buriti oil can be used morning or evening, as the final step in your routine to enhance your complexion. They have been incorporated into our botanical blend for a tanned complexion, a treatment providing a healthy glow and a slight tan to the skin, without however acting as a self-tanner.

Taking a sunbath on the water.

To accelerate the tanning process, sunbathing by the seaside can be a solution. Indeed, water and sand reflect UV rays, which optimises exposure. It is estimated that about 20% of UV rays are reflected by the sand, between 10 to 30% by the water, and 25% by sea foam. Even while swimming, ensure to protect your skin with a hat, sunglasses, and a water-resistant sunscreen.

Important : During prolonged exposure to the sun, it is crucial to reapply broad-spectrum sunscreen every two hours.

However, avoid UV tanning booths.

To tan faster, it can be tempting to use a UV tanning bed. However, this is highly discouraged, as artificial UV rays are more energetic than sunlight and, consequently, much more dangerous. Furthermore, UV tanning beds emit UVA, UVB, and UVC rays, whereas UVC rays are normally blocked by the ozone layer and do not reach our skin when we expose ourselves to the sun. They are very harmful to the skin and eyes.

It is also noteworthy that UV tanning booths are classified as "cancer-causing" by the International Agency for Research on Cancer (IARC). Scientists have estimated that exposure to artificial UV rays before the age of 30 increases the risk of developing a melanoma by 75%. Therefore, for safe tanning, it is better to avoid UV booths and favour natural sun exposure.
