Profile: Wrinkles around the Lip Contour

Definition:   Visible irreversible traits around the mouth. There are primarily three types of wrinkles in this area: (1) sun pleats, barcode wrinkles or smoker's lines, which are vertical or oblique furrows around the upper lip contour under the nose; (2) bitterness folds or marionette lines, referring to oblique wrinkles starting from the corners of the mouth and descending towards the jaw; and (3) nasolabial folds or smile lines, which are linear furrows that start from the wings of the nose to the angle of the mouth.

Internal and external causes:   Muscle hypercontraction, skin ageing, smoking, frequent exposure to the sun, repeated movements (whistling, drinking with a straw, kissing, smoking, etc...).

How to reduce or eliminate them:   Applying treatments containing active ingredients with moisturising and firming effects (hyaluronic acid, polyglutamic acid, retinoids, peptides, coenzyme Q10...); aesthetic medicine (hyaluronic acid injection, fractional laser, chemical peeling to be performed in a dermatological clinic, microdermabrasion, lip scrubbing, radiofrequency, micro needling, thread lifts).

Preventive measures:   Performing facial gymnastics; protecting the mouth and its contour against UV rays with a suitable sun care product; applying a daily moisturising treatment around the mouth; carrying out an exfoliation once a week; opting for moisturising and firming treatments (bakuchiol, peptides, retinoids, hyaluronic acid, coenzyme Q10, etc.).
