Mascara and mascara serum: what are the differences?

Before lending sensuality and softness to the gaze, eyelashes serve a protective function for our eyes. They capture foreign bodies (dust, sand, droplets of sweat, etc.) at the eyelid margins to prevent them from entering the eye. However, certain habits, factors and/or actions can compromise their integrity and affect their growth.

Indeed, daily make-up removal and application, repeated or poorly executed eyelash extension procedures, improper cleansing, exposure to dust, the use of excessively harsh removers, and frequent eyelash tinting all place significant stress on the lashes and can greatly contribute to their premature shedding. Therefore, to maintain strong, less brittle eyelashes, it is crucial to select the appropriate treatments. When choosing between a lash serum and a mascara, which should you favour? Here are the differences:

  • Functions: Depending on the desired effect, mascara may be formulated to curl the eyelashes, lengthen them or add volume. While mascara’s primary focus is therefore the aesthetic appearance of the lashes, that of the mascara serum extends beyond this function. Its role is to safeguard lash health. In addition to nourishing and fortifying the lashes, this treatment based on active ingredients also stimulates the growth of new eyelashes. Furthermore, mascara serum is ideal for addressing issues of brittle or drooping lashes. As such, mascara serum is considered a treatment, whereas mascara is regarded as make-up.

  • Composition: By enveloping the eyelash surface with a continuous wax film through mascara, the lashes intensify and lengthen with each application: the effects are instantaneous and superficial. In contrast, the mascara serums particularly distinguish themselves by acting on the catagen phase of the eyelash life cycle, aiming to stimulate the hair follicles to ensure optimal anchorage of the hair and extend its lifespan. They also supply the necessary nutrients to activate lash regrowth and enhance their resilience, making lashes less brittle and more robust. Effects only become apparent after several days but deliver long-lasting results;

  • Application: Whether they are short or long, thick or thin, it is important to care for your eyelashes regularly, particularly as part of your make-up routine. For this, you should apply a mascara base in a serum form that is applied prior to mascara. It can be used both day and night, helping to stimulate lash growth and thus reduce shedding, while also ensuring better mascara retention. However, make sure it has dried completely before applying your mascara. Indeed, mascaras tend to weaken the lashes, hence the need for a base beforehand. With the mascara serum, it is unnecessary to go through this step as it already contains nourishing and fortifying active ingredients. This lash make-up treatment thus combines the properties of a mascara base with those of a traditional mascara in a single product.

Overview of Typology’s mascara serum.

Part treatment, part make-up, our serum mascara provides both colour and length to the lashes for a natural finish, whilst nourishing and strengthening them over the long term. This 2-in-1 treatment can therefore completely substitute traditional mascara, enhancing the gaze by sculpting the curves and length of your lashes with its 100 % bio-sourced polymer applicator.

Its formula, composed of 96% naturally derived ingredients with 5.8% specialised care, contains pea peptides for their fortifying and densifying properties, castor oil to nourish and support the growth of new lashes, phytokeratin to strengthen their structure and improve resilience, and arginine to combat premature lash fallout. Moreover, its composition is free from silicones, animal-derived ingredients (beeswax) and mineral oils.

Note : Although it also functions as a skincare treatment, it must still be removed at the end of the day with a suitable make-up remover .
