If makeup removal is part of the daily routines we perform, there are numerous mistakes to avoid for it to be truly effective. Which formula should you choose? What accessories should you use? How should you go about it? Our experts provide the answers.
The secrets of effective makeup removal.
1. Treat your skin gently.
If makeup removal could be summarised in a single word, it would undoubtedly be 'gentleness'. Regardless of your skin type, the skin needs to be cleansed with products that do not disrupt the hydrolipidic film. Therefore, the best option remains thecleansing oil. Although it may seem oilier than other formulas, it allows for a deep cleanse of the epidermis and constitutes the ideal first step in a routine based on double cleansing.
2. Use the right accessories.
While cleansing brushes have long been popular, we now know that they can be harsh on the skin if used daily. Indeed, they can irritate the skin and disrupt its balance. It is advisable to use them once or twice a week.
Makeup removal wipes are indeed convenient, but they do not completely remove makeup and impurities deposited on the skin. Worse, they can cause irritations and also promote the neglect of cleansing after their use.
While disposable cotton pads are not recommended due to their lack of environmental friendliness, their reusable versionis particularly useful for removing makeup. To be used with themicellar water, they effectively remove all makeup particles and impurities, without harming the skin. Moreover, they allow you to check when to stop the makeup removal process. As long as your cotton pad is not white, it means it's not finished and you need to continue cleaning. You can wash them by hand, with hot water and vegetable soap, or put them in the washing machine.
3. The Ideal Makeup Removal Routine.
Removing makeup is not in itself a challenging task, provided you adopt the right techniques. Whether you wear makeup or not, you must adhere to this routine in the evening as it allows you to remove all impurities (pollution, allergens, dust, etc...) accumulated during the day. For a comprehensive and effective daily cleansing routine, here are the three steps to follow:
Step 1: Select a makeup remover suitable for your skin type. If you are using a cleansing oil, apply a few drops directly into your hands. Warm the oil for a few seconds between your palms, then perform circular movements across your entire face, ensuring no area is overlooked. On the other hand, if you are using micellar water, apply it onto a reusable cotton pad and then cleanse your face until all makeup has completely disappeared. Continue to remove makeup until your cotton pad is clean. This is a guarantee of cleanliness.
Step 2: Rinse thoroughly with clean water. However, if your skin is dry or sensitive, opt for the use of micellar water or supplement with a hydrating toner to avoid further drying out your epidermis and thus remove the lime scale residues deposited on your skin.
Step 3: Complete with a facial cleanser according to your skin type for a deep cleanse.
Step 4: Depending on your needs, apply to your now clean and dry skin, your night serum to nourish and treat the skin, and a moisturising cream or a vegetable oil.
