Self-Tanner: Our Tips

Self-tanner gives you a sun-tanned complexion without exposing yourself to the sun all day. How to use it? What criteria should you look for when choosing a self-tanner? How to apply it to achieve the desired effect? We will give you some tips about self-tanner and its application.

What Is a Self-Tanner?

A self-tanner is a skin care product that gives an even, tan-like tan without exposing you to the sun for several hours. By using a self-tanner, you can avoid the harmful effects of UV rays such as sunburn, signs of premature aging (wrinkles, fine lines, sagging skin, etc.) or skin blemishes (pigmentation spots, pimples, etc.).

How Does a Self-Tanner Work?

The mode of action of self-tanning products is based on the Maillard reaction. The dihydroxyacetone (DHA) molecules present react with amines, peptides and amino acids in the top layer of the skin to form pigments called melanoidins, which are responsible for the coloration of the skin. Nevertheless, this color gradually fades and completely disappears within 5 to 7 days. This is due to the frequent renewal of the stratum corneum (natural process of desquamation). Note that DHA can be of both plant and synthetic origin. We recommend that you use a self-tanner that contains DHA of natural origin.

Please note: Self-tanner does not protect against UV rays and is not a substitute for a sunscreen! Be sure to protect yourself from UV rays with a broad-spectrum sunscreen before going out in the sun.

How To Use a Self-Tanner?

To choose a self-tanner, first apply a small amount of product to your wrist or the back of your hand to make sure it's not too dark and/or that you don't develop a skin reaction. To get an even and natural tan afterwards, follow these steps:

  1. Before applying a self-tanner, you need to prepare your skin. Exfoliate the day before to remove dead skin cells so that the self-tanner can adhere to the skin. For example, you can use the nourishing body scrub and the radiant face scrub. If you prefer it in solid form, you can use the gentle poppy seed scrub to gently exfoliate your skin and nourish it at the same time. It is made from 100% natural ingredients and contains poppy seeds, olive oil, coconut oil and sunflower oil;

  2. The next day, before applying your self-tanner, wash your skin with a cleanser that is appropriate for your skin type and depending on the area. Then, gently dry your skin;

  3. Put a hazelnut-sized amount of self-tanner in your hand, then use the flat of your hand to apply it in a circular motion to the areas of your body that you want to tan. When you apply it to the face, don't forget the neck, the eye area or even the ears ;

  4. Wash your hands immediately after application;

  5. Let the product dry for 30 minutes before touching or putting on a garment.

To prolong the tan, repeat the application twice in the first week and once in the following week.

How To Choose a Self-Tanner?

A single application can achieve the desired effect on the complexion. However, you need to choose your self-tanner well, as there are different shades. To achieve the desired effect, the shade should be chosen according to your own skin type (color and texture):

  • Light skin types should rather go for self-tanners with progressive tan, so that the result looks as natural as possible. Dark skin types should rather reach for self-tanners with an intense tan. Keep in mind that a self-tanner with progressive tan contains DHA in small amounts, while a self-tanner with intensive tan has a high concentration of DHA.

As for skin type, if you have oily skin, opt for a self-tanner with a light texture to prevent your skin from shining throughout the day. For dry to combination skin, self-tanners in the form of cream or milk are preferable. They provide a tanned complexion while moisturizing the skin.
