Dead skin, dehydration lines, chapping... the lips are particularly affected by external aggressions or even hormonal imbalances. Exfoliation is a crucial step in their care. But the question that arises is how often should they be exfoliated? Here are some details on this subject.
How often should you exfoliate your lips?
Lip Peeling: What is it?
Lip peeling is a technique that exfoliates this delicate area of the face. It keeps the lips supple, soft, hydrated, and less likely to become chapped. Lip peeling also helps to prevent ageing in this area, improve blood circulation, and stimulate cell renewal.
Lips are indeed particularly sensitive to external aggressions such as wind, cold, or temperature fluctuations, due to their thinness: the skin in this area is about 5 times thinner than on the rest of the body. It is therefore important to take care of them. Moreover, they are almost devoid of sebaceous glands, and therefore of sebum, which contributes to maintaining skin hydration and protection. Furthermore, over time, lips become depleted in collagen, a molecule that makes up the dermis and contributes to its structure. Lips then lose firmness and may show signs of skin sagging.
There are several types of lip peeling. The most common are the superficial peelings, which one can perform alone at home with cosmetic treatments typically based on fruit acids. It is also possible to visit a dermatologist to perform a medium or deep peeling. This aesthetic medical technique is often carried out using phenol, a molecule with a powerful "lifting" effect that helps to reduce perioral wrinkles.
How often should one perform a peel?
To prevent chapped lips and the appearance of dead skin, it is necessary to regularly care for your lips, especially in winter when they are particularly challenged. A gentle exfoliation with a superficial peel once a week helps to give them a supple and smooth appearance. However, it is worth noting that the frequency of lip exfoliation largely depends on their sensitivity. If the lips are very sensitive, it may be beneficial to space out the peels more, as they could cause cracks and damage the skin of the lips.
Regarding deep peels, which are performed by professionals, it is generally advised not to exceed 3 to 4 peels per year. This method is indeed quite abrasive for the lips, and they tend to feel attacked and dry out when the sessions are too frequent.
Typology Lip Peeling: Usage Advice.
At Typology, we offer you a range of products designed to care for your lips and make them soft, hydrated, and comfortable. This begins with regular exfoliation of the lips using our lip peeling product, enriched with mandelic acid and pomegranate enzymes (INCI name: Punica Granatum Fruit Ferment Extract).
Themandelic acid is a chemical exfoliant belonging to the family of alpha-hydroxy acids (AHA). It removes dead skin and stimulates the renewal of the lip surface. By breaking the bonds between cells, this active ingredient allows the removal of the layer of dead cells on the lip surface. The pomegranate enzyme stimulates the skin's natural hydration, while ensuring a micro-exfoliation complementary to the mandelic acid.
Before using the peel, ensure that your lips are clean and dry, and that no residue of lipstick or lip gloss is present on their surface. You can then apply the treatment in a thin layer on the lips and leave it to work without rinsing. We then recommend deeply hydrating and nourishing your lips with our repairing lip mask, enriched with ceramides (INCI name: Ceramides NG) and hyaluronic acid (INCI name: Sodium Hyaluronate). Your lips will thus be smooth, supple, hydrated and nourished.
