How to maintain your beard?

Whether it's in its early stages or fully grown, a beard needs to be maintained. There are numerous treatments designed for this purpose, as well as routines to adopt. Discover all our advice for maintaining your beard.

Why is the beard often rough and brittle?

This is primarily due to frequent shaving. Indeed, during regrowth, in order to penetrate the epidermis and the horny layer, the hairs thicken, harden and gain strength, hence their sometimes coarse and unpleasant feel. Beard hairs thus tend to be rougher than head hair. Furthermore, it is important to note that poor beard maintenance (lack of hydration, use of unsuitable tools and materials, lack of care during shaving...) enhances its rough appearance. Beard dandruff can then appear. This inevitably leads to numerous discomforts such as tightness or itching. So, what steps should be taken to maintain one's beard?

Step No. 1: Wash your beard daily.

The beard easily retains dust, dirt, and impurities. The primary aim of this step is to cleanse the skin beneath the hair and unclog the pores with a gentle cleanser. This allows the subsequent treatment to deeply penetrate the hair follicles. Moreover, by adopting this habit, you avoid itchiness and feelings of tightness, and you prevent the appearance of dandruff that affects the aesthetics of the beard.

In this regard, you might, for example, use our purifying cleansing gel. Rich in purifying active ingredients such as zinc PCA, this cleansing gel sanitises the skin, regulates sebum production and limits the development of blemishes. In addition, once or twice a week, use a beard scrub to gently remove dead cells present on the surface of the epidermis. This action will help prevent the development of ingrown hairs under the beard, sanitise the skin and stimulate hair growth.

Step No. 2: Apply targeted treatments.

Some treatments are specific to the beard such as oils and balms. The major difference between these two types of care lies in their primary function: beard balm does not nourish the skin beneath the hairs, unlike the oil. Its effect is limited to the beard; it helps to tame it. Beard balm is primarily aimed at men with an already well-established beard, whereas the beard oil can be used on a budding beard. Beard balm cannot be used for massaging the skin as it risks making the beard greasy and shiny.

Whether you have a three-day stubble or a pronounced beard, you can use our beard oil to soften your bristles and nourish the skin underneath. It is preferably applied to a clean and dry beard. This beard oil contains several plant oils: hemp, castor, argan, sunflower. It also contains essential oil of green mandarin peel, as well as essential oil of Scots pine needle. The latter gives this oil a fresh forest and pine sap fragrance. This treatment is packaged in a bottle equipped with a dosing pipette. Simply take a few drops in the palm of your hands and rub them together to warm up the material and distribute the product. Then apply the treatment to the hairy area of the facial skin. During application, massage the beard in the direction of hair growth, from root to tip, to promote its penetration.

Step No. 3: Use suitable tools.

If you have a long beard and wish to maintain it without necessarily making regular trips to the barber, equip yourself with moustache scissors for some touch-ups, a trimmer, as well as a beard brush or comb.

Indeed, for long beards, brushing is an essential ritual in beard maintenance. The primary goal is to enhance its appearance to give it a disciplined look. Moreover, this step promotes the absorption of treatments applied beforehand such as thebeard oil. Brushing should be carried out daily to prevent the formation of knots that affect the aesthetic appearance of your beard.
