Why do redness appear after shaving?

Shaving is not a trivial matter. It disrupts the hydrolipidic film, the protective layer of the skin composed of water and fat. Generally, the more sensitive the skin, the more likely it is to experience redness and irritation. These skin discomforts can also result from a poorly maintained blade, a lack of care and hygiene given to the skin, or even poor shaving technique.

Some advice to alleviate redness.

No matter your skin type, you must always take all necessary precautions. It all starts with choosing a quality razor. The ideal model is one that can provide you with a comfortable shave while facilitating post-shave care. For the beard, an electric razor is preferable, as it easily adapts to the contours of your face.

  • Preparing the skin before shaving

It is essential to perform exfoliations regularly, once a week. Exfoliation stimulates cell renewal and removes accumulated keratinocytes on the surface of the epidermis, preventing pore blockage. This makes it easier for hairs to penetrate the horny layer and they will not curl under the skin. Moreover, exfoliation helps to expose ingrown hairs which can then be cleanly shaved. For the face, you can use the radiance scrub with rosehip oil and organic carrot macerate. For body areas, we have developed a nourishing scrub as well as a toning scrub based on organic green coffee macerate (draining) and organic lemongrass and cedar essential oils (anti-cellulite).

Always cleanse the area in question just before shaving. This basic rule is sometimes overlooked. However,it is crucial to reduce the risk of irritation and the development of ingrown hairs. For the face, you could use, for example, ourrebalancing cleansing carewith nettle or if you prefer a gel texture, thepurifying cleansing gel. As for body areas, the anti-blemish shower gel Glycolic Acid 6% + Tea Tree Extract is ideal before a shaving session as it is concentrated with exfoliating and purifying active ingredients that will unclog pores and fight against the appearance of ingrown hairs. However, more sensitive skins will prefer theshower oil relipidant which contains vitamins (E+F) and bitter almond extract.Antioxidant, this care restores suppleness to the epidermis and reduces feelings of tightness while delicately scenting the skin with a light almond fragrance.

  • The actions to adopt during shaving

Shaving with water alone increases the risk of irritation and cuts. Always use a shaving foam or gel when you shave. This product will create a protective barrier between the razor blade and your skin: it thus reduces friction and therefore the risk of cuts. Moreover, the presence of foam helps you to identify the areas you have already covered. This way, you avoid going over the same area multiple times, thereby preventing skin irritation.

To prevent redness, the main rule to remember is that shaving should always be done in the direction of hair growth. By adopting this technique, you will avoid irritation and ingrown hairs. However, ensure that the process is carried out gently and without any haste.

  • Post-shaving practices

Once shaving is completed, rinse with cool water. This practice helps to tighten the pores and calm any potential bleeding. To dry the skin, avoid rubbing but lightly dab with a soft, clean towel. Then, to soothe the razor burn, nothing is better than a pure aloe vera gel or a treatment formulated with this ingredient like our hydrating gel.

To restore the hydrolipidic film and thus reduce redness, it is imperative to apply a moisturising and/or nourishing treatment. Indeed, shaving has weakened the protective skin barrier. Moreover, with the corneal layer being thinner, it is the ideal time to provide the skin with active ingredients and nutrients that will be more easily absorbed, such as nourishing, firming, slimming treatments, etc...

To rehydrate your skin after a shaving session, you can apply one of our body creams: the nourishing cream Squalane 10% + Shea Butter, the firming cream Caffeine 2% + Guarana Extract or the moisturising cream with 10 ingredients, 99% of which are of natural origin. Regarding the face, depending on your skin issues, you can choose one of our following creams:
