How can you make your lips fuller?

Over time, the body’s natural production of collagen and hyaluronic acid decreases, leading to a loss of volume and the appearance of fine lines around the lips. While aesthetic medicine offers certain solutions, some everyday habits can also help to restore fuller-looking lips. What are the different techniques for plumping the lips? Discover them below.

Which cosmetic treatments can plump the lips?

It is not always necessary to resort to aesthetic medicine to achieve fuller lips. Certain cosmetic treatments can help to make the lips appear more plump.

Exfoliating your lips once a week with a fine-grain scrub is an excellent habit for smoothing their surface. This step removes small flakes of dead skin that prevent light from reflecting, and its action goes further by stimulating microcirculation. This increased blood flow restores the lips’ natural rosy colour and immediately gives them a firmer, slightly plumped appearance. For a more pronounced effect, some masks use pepper or chilli extracts. These ingredients trigger mild vasodilation, producing a fuller, more coloured look for a few hours.

Moreover, as the lips produce almost no sebum, they quickly become thinner and show lines as soon as they lack water. To maintain full-looking lips, the regular use of a lip balm is essential. One can also opt for specific masks, to be left on for around ten minutes or overnight, to deeply hydrate the tissues. By massaging in any excess product to help it penetrate, you support the skin in recovering its suppleness and softness. This simple action helps combat lip dryness and makes them appear plumper and smoother.

Finally, hyaluronic acid is a powerful ally for restoring lip volume, and not only via injections. This molecule, which our body naturally produces, acts like a sponge by capturing water to fill the spaces between cells. However, its presence decreases over the years, which explains why the lips tend to become flatter. Using a treatment enriched with hyaluronic acid helps to compensate partly for this deficit by intensely hydrating the mucosa. By saturating the tissues with water, it becomes possible to re-densify the lips and blur the fine lines that form at the corners of the mouth.

The effectiveness of this active ingredient has moreover been confirmed by research. A clinical study conducted on 105 women evaluated a topical treatment combining hyaluronic acid of different molecular weights, vitamin B3, ceramides and peptides. Just five minutes after application, an improvement in lip volume, definition and natural colour was observed. The participants were almost unanimous, with 98% of them judging their lips to be fuller and better hydrated. While these results are impressive, caution is warranted: they are largely based on subjective self-assessments and the observed plumping effect remains temporary, requiring regular application to be maintained.

“Contouring” for visually fuller lips?

Make-up is a valuable tool for transforming the appearance of the mouth without resorting to invasive treatments. To redefine your smile, the first step is to use a lip liner whose shade is as close as possible to that of your lipstick or to the natural colour of your mucous membranes. The trick for gaining volume is to draw the outline, very slightly beyond, by about one millimetre, the natural line of the lips. By emphasising the centre of the lower lip and the peaks of the Cupid’s bow, a fuller structure is created.

To perfect this illusion, you then need to play with areas of shadow and light. Applying a touch of highlighter precisely on the Cupid’s bow – the small curve at the top of the upper lip – helps catch the light and visually project this area forward. Conversely, by applying a light veil of bronzing powder just beneath the centre of the lower lip, you create an artificial shadow that enhances the plump appearance of the mouth.

Light contrasts help to highlight the lips and create an impression of volume.

Common belief or proven fact: can exercises increase lip volume?

Facial gymnastics is attracting an increasing number of people seeking to tone their face naturally. The idea is simple: by engaging the orbicularis oris muscle that surrounds the lips, one could strengthen their outline, prevent tissue sagging and maintain the skin’s elasticity. Several exercises are therefore commonly practised, such as exaggerating the formation of the letter “O” by projecting the lips forwards, or pressing the lips firmly together as if for a prolonged kiss for around ten seconds. These repeated contractions are intended to give greater fullness to the upper and lower lips, while smoothing fine surface lines.

Other methods rely more on mechanical stimulation and resistance. Some recommend pinching the lips between the index finger and thumb to perform small, rapid pinches all around the contour in order to stimulate microcirculation. Another technique involves placing the thumbs inside the upper lip to push it forwards, while simultaneously trying to resist with the strength of the oral muscles. These movements are intended to reshape the area and promote a fuller appearance through a localised increase in blood flow.

However, despite the enthusiasm for these gentle methods, it is important to note that there is no scientific evidence demonstrating that facial exercises can plump the lips. Furthermore, there is no reason to believe that lip exercises could recreate tissue or compensate for the loss of fat and collagen.

Can cold temperatures help to plump the lips?

Cold is often mentioned as a last-minute trick to give a quick boost to lip volume. In reality, its action is mainly due to a vasoconstriction effect. When exposed to a low temperature, the blood vessels contract, then dilate in response once the cold is removed. This mechanism can cause slight swelling and enhance the natural colour of the mucosa, but this plumping effect on the lips is very short-lived, lasting only a few minutes at most.

If you wish to try this method, it is essential never to apply an ice cube directly to the skin, as this may cause a cold burn or further weaken the already very thin epidermis in this area.

Instead, prioritise the application of a cold water compress or a spoon previously placed in the refrigerator, applying light pressure to stimulate circulation without damaging the tissues.

Hyaluronic acid injections to restore volume to the lips?

For those who are seeking a more significant and long‑lasting result, hyaluronic acid injections are now considered the gold‑standard solution in aesthetic medicine.

The principle is based on the use of this hydrophilic gel to restore lost volume or to redefine the lip border. Moreover, as hyaluronic acid is naturally present in the dermis, this considerably limits the risk of rejection. During a session, the practitioner injects the product using a very fine needle at strategic points. The benefit is immediate: the lips gain in contour and appear fuller.

The procedure itself is relatively quick, lasting around twenty to thirty minutes. Although modern formulations often contain a local anaesthetic (lidocaine) to minimise discomfort, a topical anaesthetic cream may be applied beforehand. Nevertheless, the results are not permanent, as the body naturally breaks down hyaluronic acid over time. On average, the effect lasts between six and twelve months, depending on the individual’s metabolism and the density of the gel used.

However, as with any medical procedure, injections are not free from post‑operative effects.

It is common to observe some swelling or slight bruising at the injection sites for a few days. Rarer side effects, such as granulomas or asymmetries, may occur if the injection is poorly performed, which underlines the importance of consulting a qualified doctor.

Fat injections: another method for achieving fuller lips?

Finally, lipofilling of the lips, or autologous fat injection, represents a surgical alternative to synthetic dermal fillers. This technique consists in harvesting a small quantity of fat from a donor area on the patient, generally the abdomen or thighs, by liposuction, then purifying it and reinjecting it into the lips. The major advantage of this method is that it uses living tissue from the patient’s own body, thereby eliminating any risk of allergy or rejection. Unlike hyaluronic acid, a proportion of the injected fat becomes permanently integrated, thus providing a lasting result after an initial resorption of approximately 30 to 50%.

However, this is a more invasive procedure performed in the operating theatre, often under general anaesthesia. The postoperative course is also more significant: swelling is generally greater than with a hyaluronic acid injection and may persist for one to two weeks. While lipofilling makes it possible to achieve fuller lips and a very natural long-term appearance, it requires more careful consideration, because once the fat has “taken”, the volume cannot be dissolved, unlike with resorbable products.

FAQ on ways to plump your lips.

How can you naturally plump up your lips?

To enhance volume without surgery, rely on the synergy between gentle weekly exfoliation and hydration enriched with active ingredients such as hyaluronic acid.

Does brushing the lips with a toothbrush work to plump them up?

It is a form of mechanical exfoliation that stimulates circulation and temporarily plumps the lips, but it is important to be very gentle to avoid creating micro-lesions on this delicate skin.

Are chilli pepper lip balms dangerous?

They are not dangerous, but act through mild irritation to induce an increased blood flow. It is best to avoid them if your lips are chapped or irritated.

Does drinking a lot of water make your lips bigger?

Maintaining an adequate overall level of hydration is important for the proper functioning of the body, including the protection of the lips, but it will have no effect on their volume.

Is the “lip suction device” recommended for achieving fuller lips?

No, these suction devices can cause severe bruising, rupturing of capillary vessels, and irreversible tissue damage.

Is it possible to massage your lips to make them larger?

Massage may help to stimulate blood circulation, giving the skin a temporarily more rosy appearance, but the effect will remain very slight.

Injection of cadaveric fat: what is this new technique for increasing lip volume?

This technique, known as adipose tissue allograft, uses fat obtained from donors, rigorously selected and processed in the laboratory so that only a healthy structural matrix is retained. Although the term may sound surprising, the procedure is strictly governed by stringent medical protocols that ensure health safety, thereby offering a long‑lasting option for fuller lips.
