When To Use Self-Tanning Serum?

Self-tanning serums belong to the larger category of self-tanning skincare, which also includes gels, milks, mists, creams, etc. The serum differs from these other galenic products by its light and liquid texture. Here you will learn when to apply this type of care to get the most natural tanned complexion.

Self-Tanning Serum, What Is It?

The self-tanning serum is a care that allows you to achieve an even, tan-like tan without having to expose yourself to the sun for several hours. By using it, you can avoid the harmful effects of UV rays such as sunburn, signs of premature aging (wrinkles, fine lines, skin sagging...) or skin blemishes (pigmentation spots, pimples...).

The mode of action of a self-tanning care is based on the Maillard reaction. The dihydroxyacetone (DHA) molecules that are present react with the amino functions of the amino acids in the stratum corneum to form pigments called melanoidins, which are responsible for the brown coloration of the skin. However, if the self-tanner is not reapplied a few days later, this color gradually fades and disappears completely after 5 to 7 days. This phenomenon can be explained by the frequent renewal of the horny layer (natural desquamation process).

When Can I Apply a Self-Tanning Serum?

A self-tanning serum can be applied at any time of the year. For example, if you want to have a tanned complexion during the first days of your vacation in summer, you can apply the self-tanning serum a few days before you leave. You can also use it after your vacation in the fall to prolong your tan as long as possible. In winter, when the sun is absent, the skin tends to become sallow and pale. Self-tanner restores color to the complexion and gives the skin a tanned look without exposing you to the sun.

We recommend applying the self-tanning serum preferably in the evening. If you decide to apply it before going to bed, the pigments will work their magic while you sleep, giving you a tanned complexion when you wake up.

How Often Can I Apply Self-Tanning Serum?

Self-tanner is not harmful to the skin and can be applied every two to three days to prolong its effect.

Caution: self-tanning serum does not protect against the UV rays of the sun and is not a substitute for sunscreen! Be sure to protect yourself from UV rays with broad-spectrum sunscreen before going out in the sun.

The Typology Self-Tanning Serum

Self-tanning serum with DHA and carob fruit extract tans the complexion as early as 12 hours after the first application for a gradual effect. Our bottle has a pipette to help you measure the amount to be applied. A few drops are enough to get an evenly tanned skin.
