What is "Salicornia Herbacea Extract" and what is its utility?

The Salicornia Herbacea Extract is a name that can often be seen among the ingredients of skincare products. However, few consumers know what it is. What is its purpose? Where does it come from? We provide some explanations about Salicornia Herbacea Extract.

Salicornia Herbacea Extract: What is it?

The Salicornia Herbacea extract is derived from the glasswort, a plant that grows by the sea. Not to be confused with seaweed, this plant is characterised by its successive swellings ending in a kind of protruding nipple. As a halophyte, the glasswort can tolerate high salinity without drying out.

Also known as "sea asparagus", samphire is rich in vitamins (A, C and D) and minerals (zinc, manganese, silica...). It is also high in omega 3.

What is its utility?

In the field of nutrition, samphire is consumed for its richness in vitamins and minerals, as well as for its diuretic and detoxifying qualities. Thanks to its hydrating virtues, salicornia herbacea extract is included in the composition of numerous skincare products. It promotes water production by stimulating the urea production mechanism. This latter plays an essential role in skin hydration.

It also provides the skin with all the minerals and vitamins it requires. Thanks to its hydrating and lipid-replenishing abilities, the salicornia extract limits water evaporation, thus preventing skin dehydration. It also contributes to skin regeneration and combats lack of skin density.
