What is "Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil" and what is its use?

Known by its INCI (International Nomenclature of Cosmetic Ingredients) name Macadamia Ternifolia Seed Oil, this ingredient is also commonly referred to as macadamia nut oil. Of plant origin, it is compatible with organic skincare products.

As its name suggests, macadamia nut oil is extracted from macadamia nuts. These are the fruit of the macadamia tree, which has its origins in Australia, but is now found in the South Pacific region and South Africa. This is an evergreen tree primarily cultivated for its nut-like fruits, which are similar to chestnuts.

Macadamia nut oil is obtained through cold pressing, that is, under a temperature of 60% or less. The mechanical process is carried out without the use of solvents. Indeed, the whole shells are dried, then crushed. They are placed in cloth bags before being cold pressed with the aim of obtaining a crude oil. No refining treatment is necessary.

Unlike other vegetable oils, macadamia nut oil stands out due to its high content of palmitoleic acid, an ingredient predominantly found in animal fats. As a result, macadamia nut oil can easily replace mink oil, which is derived from the subcutaneous fat of the mink. In the field of cosmetology, macadamia nut oil is among the ingredients chosen for the creation of massage oils. Indeed, it is easy to spread and readily absorbed by the skin.

Macadamia nut oil is incorporated into emollient skincare products. It contributes to the softening and relaxation of skin tissues, which reduces dryness and skin dehydration. Moreover, this ingredient is also used to formulate moisturising treatments. It softens the skin surface and promotes cellular regeneration, particularly in dry, chapped and/or sensitive skin. When combined with other ingredients, macadamia ternifloria seed oil also acts as a skin conditioning agent.

Rich in unsaturated fatty acids, macadamia nut oil contributes to the elasticity and suppleness of the skin. Due to its nourishing properties, this ingredient softens and soothes the skin. As it penetrates the skin layers quite quickly, it leaves no greasy film upon application. Macadamia nut oil contains a high content of oleic acid and palmitoleic acid , which facilitates skin healing. Therefore, it is recommended for sensitive, acne-prone or damaged skin.

Skincare products containing macadamia oil are also used to diminish stretch marks or cracks on the skin. Due to its strengths, this ingredient is incorporated into the formulation of night face creams, eye contour serums, moisturising oils for the body and face, lip balms or hair oils.
