What is "Ethylhexyl Triazone" and what is its use?

When exposed to the sun, unprotected skin is subjected to the assault of UVA and UVB rays. UVA rays penetrate deep into the skin, promoting premature ageing. As for UVB rays, they primarily damage the skin's surface, causing burns and sunburn. To protect the skin from UV rays, mineral and organic sun filters are added to skincare formulas, notably "Ethylhexyl Triazone".

What is "Ethylhexyl Triazone"?

The "Ethylhexyl Triazone", translated into English as "Octyl Triazone", is an organic compound added to sunscreens to absorb UVB rays. Also known as Uvinul T 150, this active ingredient is valued for its strong absorption capacity. Indeed, it exhibits a superior photo-stable absorption capacity compared to all other currently available UVB filters. Its maximum absorption is at 314 nm.

"Ethylhexyl Triazone" presents itself as a powder soluble in oil. It is odourless and colourless, making it an ideal active ingredient in fragrance-free skincare products. According to European restrictions, the maximum permitted concentration of "Ethylhexyl Triazone" is 5%. This rate is the same in most countries, with the exception of the United States and Canada.

What is the purpose of "Ethylhexyl Triazone"?

"Ethylhexyl Triazone" is valued for its absorption capacity. Its main functions in a formula are as follows:

  • It absorbs UV rays. This property helps to protect the skincare product and its active ingredients from the effects of UV.

  • It filters certain UV rays to protect the skin and hair from their harmful effects.

  • This stabilising agent contributes to the enhancement of ingredients and/or the stability of the formulation.

  • It promotes the longevity of the skincare product.

Manufacturers take advantage of the properties of "Ethylhexyl Triazone" to finalise the formula of various skincare products. Here are a few examples:

  • Children's sun creams;

  • Adult sun creams;

  • Day creams;

  • The lotions ;

  • Sunscreen oils.

This active ingredient is also used in lipsticks and lip balms to maintain the quality of their components.

"Ethylhexyl Triazone" in a Typology skincare product

The SPF30 face sun cream contains "Ethylhexyl Triazone" in its formula. However, this organic active ingredient is not a primary active ingredient, but is used in small doses. The product combines mineral and organic filters to provide broad-spectrum protection against UVA and UVB rays. Regular application during sun exposure days helps to prevent photoaging. The main ingredients of the SPF30 face sun cream are natural active ingredients:

  • Aloe Vera:

Thanks to its hydrating power, aloe gel compensates for water loss. It is also rich in trace elements and vitamins, essential contributions to skin repair.

  • Hyaluronic Acid:

This active ingredient is derived from the fermentation of wheat. It is selected for its highly moisturising virtues.

  • Karanja Oil:

It is selected for its antioxidant properties and its composition rich in flavonoids.

The SPF30 face sun cream is composed of 83.9% natural origin ingredients.
