What is "CI 77492" and what is its purpose?

In the pharmaceutical industry, CI 77492 is known as "Yellow Iron Oxide" and is used as a colourant. Approved for organic use and of mineral origin, it is often combined with other colourants such as CI 77499 (black) and CI 77491 (red). The question that arises is: what is CI 77492 and what is its purpose? Let's focus.

Everything you need to know about CI 77492.

CI 77492 is a yellow iron oxide. It imparts a yellow colour to foundations. To achieve different shades, it should be mixed with red and black iron oxides. Chemically speaking, CI 77492 is a ferric oxide. It can range from a light lemon shade to an orange-yellow, depending on the manufacturing conditions.

Iron oxides are available in three basic shades:

  • Red Iron Oxide (CI 77491): It is derived from hematite, a common mineral;

  • Black Iron Oxide (CI 77499): It is produced from a mineral, magnetite;

  • Yellow Iron Oxide (CI 77492): It is derived from limonites.

Generally, the iron oxides used in skincare are synthetic. Besides their use in skincare, they can also be found in coatings, paints, and coloured concretes.

Similar to other iron oxides, CI 77492 is regulated by the FDA (Food and Drug Administration), which stipulates that the production of synthetic iron oxides is carried out in various ways:

  • Through the thermal decomposition of iron salts;

  • By precipitation;

  • By reduction of organic ingredients through iron.

The level of impurities varies between synthetic and natural forms of iron oxides. It is recommended to favour synthetic iron oxides, which are considered safe.

CI 77492: What is its purpose?

CI 77492 is an ingredient used to add colour to skincare products. However, it's important to note that it does not improve the skin's condition. CI 77492 is solely used to enhance the visual appeal of skincare products. This colourant blends well with most ingredients and is suitable for all skin types. However, it is not recommended for people who are allergic to it. At Typology, this colourant is particularly present in our tinted skincare products, such as the tinted serum, the tinted under-eye concealer and the tinted lip balms.
