What is "C9-12 Alkane"?

The "C9-12 Alkane" is a linear and volatile organic hydrocarbon with 9 to 12 carbon atoms in their alkyl chain, whose volatility properties are similar to those of petroleum-derived isododecane and synthetic cyclomethicones.

In its raw form, the alkane C9-12 appears as a clear, colourless and virtually odourless liquid. It is possible to produce alkanes in the C9-12 range from petrochemical raw materials or vegetable oils through a refining and fractionation process (hydrogenation).

Designed in France, the "C9-12 Alkane" used in our skincare products has a plant-based origin, derived from coconut oil .

"C9-12 Alkane": why use it in formulations?

Hair masks, conditioners, foundations, sunscreens... the primary use of C9-12 alkane is to dissolve or dilute other ingredients within a formulation so that they blend well to form a light, smooth and fluid texture. This compound also enhances the product's spreadability and uniformity, and prevents oil-based and water-based ingredients from separating. In skincare, "C9-12 Alkane" helps to soften and smooth the skin by forming a surface layer due to its emollient properties, thereby giving it a feeling of freshness and suppleness.

Are there health risks associated with its topical use?

"C9-12 Alkane" is a safe ingredient and has no known side effects. It is suitable for all skin types and is non-comedogenic, meaning it does not clog pores and does not cause acne. However, it is always advisable to carry out a skin test before applying it.
