Gentler than AHA (Alpha Hydroxy Acids), PHA (Polyhydroxy Acids) are mild exfoliants for the skin. They are suitable for mature, dry or reactive skin types, providing them with radiance and softness, whilst improving their texture.
The PHAs are gentler than AHAs and are suitable for sensitive skin, unlike AHAs. This is due to their larger molecular size, which gives them a lower penetration ability.
Are PHAs hydrating?
Some PHAs, such as lactobionic acid, possess moisturising properties, in addition to exfoliating the skin.
Do PHAs cause photosensitivity?
No, PHAs are not photosensitising and can be used in the morning.
Can PHAs help to reduce pigmentation spots?
By superficially exfoliating the skin, the PHA can help to even out the complexion. However, for optimal effectiveness, it is recommended to combine them with depigmenting agents, such as tranexamic acid.
Can PHAs act on wrinkles?
Some PHAs, such as galactose, can stimulate collagen synthesis. It could be hypothesised that this property would allow it to reduce wrinkles, although studies are needed to confirm this.
