How To Use Conditioner?

It basically helps to detangle hair after washing it with shampoo. The way how to apply conditioner depends on its texture, type, and the information provided by the manufacturer. In this article, follow our advice on how to use conditioner.

What Is Conditioner?

Simply put, a conditioner is a conditioning or moisturizing agent that is usually made up of ingredients such as silicones (excluded at Typology), oils and emollients, and cationic surfactants (detergent compounds that remove oil). When combined, these ingredients help rehydrate hair after the shampoo has partially dehydrated it.

How To Use Conditioner Correctly?

There are varied types, and we will explain to you how to apply conditioner in its different forms properly:

  • Among the most common, there is of course the traditional conditioner to be applied after the shampoo on damp, towel-dried hair. Use the amount of conditioner recommended on the bottle (often 2 to 3 hazelnuts). Spread it evenly over the ends of your hair. For long hair, distribute it from the chin downwards. Do not apply conditioner on scalp. Run your fingers or a wide-tooth comb through the ends of your hair to work the conditioner in. Leave the conditioner on your hair for a while, following the instructions on the label. This is typically about a minute. Rinse the conditioner out thoroughly, using lukewarm or even cold water to tighten the hair scales.

  • There is also a deep conditioner, which is similar to a hair mask in that it must be applied for a longer period of time (usually 2 to 5 minutes) in order to penetrate the hair more deeply.

  • Today, there is also the cleansing conditioner (called “co-wash”), which acts as a shampoo and a conditioner. This hybrid product simultaneously cleanses and conditions the hair. To use this type of treatment, thoroughly wet your hair in the shower. Apply the product to your entire head and hair, from roots to ends. After rinsing your hair completely, it will be clean but also a little soft.

  • Finally, some leave-in conditioners are also available on the market. These are leave-in treatments to be applied after the shower, which nourish and protect the hair throughout the day. To use a leave-in treatment, gently towel dry your hair to remove excess water after showering. Apply the leave-in conditioner according to the instructions on the bottle. Gently comb your hair with your fingers or a wide-tooth comb. Avoid applying conditioner on scalp and crown of your head. Let your hair air dry or continue styling as usual. You can also use it at bedtime.
