What Are the Benefits of Conditioner?

The combination of shampoo and conditioner in a hair care routine is ideal. The shampoo cleans the hair fiber, while the conditioner will detangle the hair. But hair conditioner can have numerous purposes and different virtues.

What Is Conditioner?

Simply put, a conditioner is a moisturizing or conditioning agent that is usually made up of ingredients such as silicones (excluded at Typology), oils and emollients, and cationic surfactants (detergent compounds that remove oil). When combined, these ingredients help rehydrate hair after it has been partially dehydrated by shampooing.

The Benefits of Conditioner.

The main purpose of conditioner is to facilitate the detangling of the hair. Indeed, its application on the hair fiber will limit the formation of knots and facilitate styling. It is particularly used for wavy, curly or frizzy hair that tends to frizz. It will help preserve the appearance of curls. In natural hair care, several detangling compounds can be added: biodegradable ingredients from plant sources such as beet and rapeseed (INCI: “Arachidyl/Behenyl Alcohol”), cetyl alcohol (INCI: “Cetyl Alcohol”), flax seed extract (INCI: “Linum Usitatissimum seed extract”). Often, the benefits of conditioner end here.

However, some conditioners may contain active ingredients, making them similar to hair masks. They may contain active repairing agents such as keratin or vegetable oils/butters (avocado oil, shea butter or mango butter)… Others are enriched with moisturizing compounds (hyaluronic acid, aloe vera…).

Types of Hair Conditioner.

There are different types of conditioner. Among the most common, there is of course the traditional conditioner to be applied after shampooing on towel-dried hair and left on for a few minutes before rinsing.

There is also the deep conditioner, which is similar to a hair mask in that it must be applied for a longer period of time in order to penetrate the hair more deeply.

Today, there is also the cleansing conditioner (called “co-wash”), which acts as a shampoo and a conditioner. This hybrid product simultaneously cleanses and conditions the hair.

Finally, some leave-in conditioners are also available on the market. These are leave-in treatments to be applied after the shower, which nourish and protect the hair throughout the day.
