Why do certain food allergies cause spots?

Following the consumption of a food not tolerated by the immune system, food allergies can trigger various symptoms, including skin rashes. How can we explain this phenomenon? Let's explore the underlying biological mechanisms together.

Why can spots appear as a result of a food allergy?

Increasingly common, food allergies affect not only the gastrointestinal and respiratory tracts but also the skin, and can cause spots. This release leads to an influx of inflammatory mediators, including histamine, which plays a key role in the dilation of blood vessels and the onset of itching. The clustering of immune cells in the skin tissues also causes their swelling, visible in the form of small papules grouping into red patches: the allergy spots.

  • Non-immunoglobulin E antibody mediated food allergic reactions.

    Also known as cell-mediated food allergies, non-IgE-mediated reactions involve T lymphocytes, specialized immune cells. When they encounter allergenic proteins, they release pro-inflammatory cytokines, molecules that attract other immune cells and amplify the inflammatory response. This process causes erythematous eruptions that resemble eczema eczema. These rashes are often located in the folds of the elbows and knees. Unlike those characteristic of urticaria, they tend to persist longer and are generally associated with more pronounced irritation.

Spots caused by a food allergy: how to recognise them and how to respond?

Spots related to food allergies are sometimes confused with other types of skin rashes, but certain elements allow them to be differentiated, such as their rapid onset. Indeed, spots caused by a food allergy often appear a few minutes to a few hours after ingestion of the allergen, whereas those due to acne, for example, form more slowly. Moreover, allergic spots cause intense itching, even though acne or rosacea spots are generally painless. Visually, they take the form of red, raised papules, sometimes associated with swelling. It should also be noted that the red patches caused by food allergies can be more or less wide and vary in size and shape.

What should be done in the case of spots caused by a food allergy reaction?

It is essential to consult a doctor in the event of a food allergy reaction.
