When To Apply Azelaic Acid?

Azelaic acid is an active ingredient derived from grains such as wheat that is rarely used in skin care. Yet, this ingredient is full of benefits for oily to combination (+) skin with a tendency to acne. When should you use a care with azelaic acid and what steps should you follow? You can find our tips in this article.

The Characteristics of Azelaic Acid

Azelaic acid belongs to the dicarboxylic acids. In dermatology, it is known as an effective solution to combat acne and hyperpigmentation. It has excellent antimicrobial properties that inhibit the proliferation of P. acnes, the bacterium that causes the inflammatory reactions associated with acne. It also regulates keratinization, which means that it affects cell renewal in the epidermis by limiting the formation of dead cells that clog pores and cause blackheads. On the surface of the skin, azelaic acid breaks down free fatty acid molecules, which gives the skin a matte and even appearance.

When and How To Use a Skin Care With Azelaic Acid?

Azelaic acid is a milder acid than AHA peels such as glycolic or lactic acid. Treatment with azelaic acid usually causes very little irritation, even among the most sensitive individuals. For the face, this active ingredient can be found in lotions, creams, serums, cleansing gels and masks. Care with this active ingredient can be applied once or twice a day, morning and evening, as this substance is not photosensitizing.

Typology has developed the mattifying serum with 10% azelaic acid. It is particularly suitable for combination to oily skin. Three to four drops in the morning and evening on the previously cleansed and dried skin are sufficient to reduce pores, refine the skin texture and mattify the complexion. We recommend that you use the serum for at least four weeks in order to observe an effect.
