The Karanja, also known as Pongamia Glabra or Pongolote tree, is a tree native to India. It belongs to the Fabaceae family. Karanja oil, or "Pongamia Glabra Seed Oil", is extracted from its seeds. It has been used for a long time in Ayurvedic medicine. Thanks to its various properties, it is now highly regarded in the skincare industry.

What is "Pongamia Glabra Seed Oil"?

The "Pongamia Glabra Seed Oil", also known as Karanja seed oil, is derived from the first cold pressing of the tree's seeds. It is a fluid liquid with a colour ranging from yellow to brown. This oily liquid can be deodorised. Otherwise, it has a slight nutty note.

The "Pongamia Glabra Seed Oil" has a high content of fatty acids. It includes, among others:

  • 9 to 12% of palmitic acid (SFA);

  • 15 to 25% linoleic acid (Omega 6 PUFAs);

  • 2 to 5% of linolenic acid (Omega 3 PUFAs);

  • 3 to 5% of behenic acid;

This vegetable oil also contains karanjin (2 to 3%) and pongamol (0.4% to 0.7%).

When applied topically, the oil is suitable for all skin types. However, it is particularly recommended for mature skin and those prone to acne.

What is the utility of "Pongamia Glabra Seed Oil"?

The karanja oil exhibits the following properties:

  • Moisturiser :

Thanks to its high content of omega 9, it strengthens the hydrolipidic barrier while moisturising and providing tonicity to the skin.

Thanks to its composition rich in omega 6 and flavonoids, it exhibits antioxidant properties. It promotes the regeneration of skin tissue and the healing process.

  • UV Ray Protector:

The pengamol and karanjin found in the oil contribute to the skin's protection against UVA and UVB rays. The oil prepares the skin for sun exposure.

  • Hair Conditioner:

This active ingredient promotes softness and flexibility in hair. It adds volume and shine to the hair. The oil is particularly recommended for coloured, damaged or weakened hair.
