What are the benefits of sage hydrosol for the skin?

The sage officinalis originates from the Mediterranean basin. It is an aromatic plant from the Lamiaceae family with blue-green leaves. These leaves are dried and distilled by steam distillation to produce a hydrosol with multiple benefits when applied to the skin.

The common sage and its hydrosol, in brief.

The name Salvia originates from the Latin word salvare, meaning "to heal". This aromatic plant has been valued since antiquity for its numerous pharmaceutical virtues. It was used to combat certain infections such as gangrene and to stimulate digestion. Rich in oestrogenic-type molecules (female hormones), this plant is still recommended today during menopause, to partially compensate for the hormonal drop that characterises this period.

Thesage hydrosol is obtained through the steam distillation of dried leaves. This process actually allows for the extraction of two distinct fractions: theessential oil and thehydrosol. Derived from the same plant, both fractions have similar properties, but the hydrosol is less concentrated in active species as the aromatic essences are present in smaller quantities. Thesage hydrosol is thus considered a gentler alternative to the essential oil, which is deemed neurotoxic due to its high thujone content. It should be noted that this essential oil is listed among those whose sale is restricted to pharmacists (Public Health Code).

1. The use of sage hydrosol to limit skin ageing.

This compound is an excellent antioxidant. It fights against free radicals that cause oxidative stress. As a reminder, this phenomenon is natural but exacerbated by various factors such as UV rays, pollution, stress, smoking... Free radicals are unstable and highly reactive molecules that damage a wide range of healthy compounds in the body (DNA, RNA, proteins, membrane lipids...), accelerating its ageing. At the skin level, it loses firmness and reveals irregularities (wrinkles, pigmentation spots...). Sage hydrolat, by combating this mechanism, helps to delay skin ageing and protects the skin from external aggressions.

2. The hydrosol of sage officinalis for purifying oily skin.

This hydrolat haspurifying andbalancing virtues. It contributes to the regulation of sebum production, thus preventing the excesses that cause oily and unbalanced skin. It refines the skin texture, tightens the pores and prevents the appearance of blemishes.

3. The use of sage hydrolat to limit perspiration.

The hydrosol of sage officinalis has a regulatory effect on the sweat glands. It thus acts as anatural deodorantand effectively combats excessive perspiration.
