What Are the Benefits of Natural Lavender Oil for the Skin?

Known since ancient times, lavender is characterized by its pleasant smell. The Romans used it to impregnate their linen and their baths with a flowery perfume. Today, this plant is used in various skin care products because of its many benefits for the skin. True lavender flowers provide an essential oil that is soothing and healing as well as disinfecting and purifying. Discover more about all the properties of natural lavender oil.

What Is True Lavender?

Also called “fine lavender” in French, true lavender (Lavandula angustifolia), a different botanical species from spike lavender (Lavandula latifolia), belongs to the Lamiaceae family. It is cultivated in Provence and Spain, and takes the form of a shrub with long stems bearing purple inflorescence, giving off a pleasant fragrance. True lavender essential oil is the result of steam distillation, using the dried flowering tops of the plant.

Organoleptically, it is a light yellow to orange liquid with a floral and herbaceous fragrance. Lavender extract contains mainly esters (about 30% linalyl acetate), monoterpenols (linalool) and monoterpenes (terpinene, limonene). These compounds are the source of its soothing, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial and purifying properties.

True Lavender Essential Oil Is Soothing.

The extract obtained from the flowering tops of true lavender is an essential oil that is soothing and healing, known for its analgesic actions. Linalool, belonging to the family of monoterpene alcohols, and linalyl acetate, belonging to the family of terpenes, are both part of the composition of True Lavender essential oil. They are able to inhibit certain nociceptors, receptors responsible for the transmission of pain in the body.

Natural lavender oil can also be used to relieve itching, sunburn or burning after shaving. Its calming power makes it particularly suitable for sensitive or irritated skin. It is also recommended in the case of insect bites or to repel mosquitoes.

The Anti-inflammatory Benefits of Lavender Oil.

The linalool and linalyl acetate present in True Lavender essential oil promote the synthesis of HSP70 (Heat Shock Protein). These are responsible for the proper conformation of proteins found in the body's cells and help protect them from external stresses (heat, heavy metals ...), potentially causing inflammatory phenomena. By contributing to the inhibition of these reactions, true lavender essential oil has an anti-inflammatory action. This is why it is found in certain skin care products to soothe redness, irritation or more generally feelings of discomfort.

Natural Lavender Oil Has Antibacterial Properties.

The use of this essential oil is also advised for the skins prone to the imperfections or with acneic tendency. The active ingredients (linalool, 1,8-cineole and terpenes) act in synergy to limit the proliferation of parasites, such as Leishmania amazonensis, responsible for leishmaniasis, and bacteria, such as Cutibacterium acnes, involved in acne.

They intervene by altering the external membranes of the bacteria and by inhibiting their ability to communicate with each other via molecular mediators (quorum sensing). The antibacterial action of True Lavender essential oil thus helps to prevent or calm skin eruptions.

True Lavender Oil Has a Purifying Action.

The extract of true lavender is also the ally of the shiny and oily skins. Indeed, it helps to eliminate the imperfections by purifying the skin and by matifying it. The biochemical composition of true lavender essential oil gives it an absorbing action on sebum and regenerating benefits for the skin. A reduction in the amount of sebum was observed in particular during the combined use of essential oils of true lavender, tea tree and eucalyptus. These different properties make true lavender essential oil an ingredient of choice that can be found in the composition of several creams, scrubs or shampoos.

Possible Regenerative Benefits of Lavender Essential Oil.

It is said that True Lavender essential oil accelerates the healing of the skin and contributes to the regeneration of tissues thanks to the camphor in its composition. This active ingredient acts by improving blood circulation and activating collagen synthesis. Tired or dry skin would also benefit from its regenerative properties.

Other studies suggest that the cutaneous application of natural lavender oil benefits the proliferation of fibroblasts to produce collagen-rich healing tissue. Nevertheless, this action still remains controversial for the moment.
