Comedogenicity

Comedogenicity describes the ability of an ingredient or cosmetic product to occlude pores, thereby promoting the development of open or closed comedones. All skin types may be affected, although oily and acne-prone skin is particularly susceptible. Identifying components to avoid and favouring non-comedogenic skincare is essential for maintaining clear and balanced skin.
FAQ about comedogenicity

How can one determine whether an ingredient is comedogenic?

There is a scale of comedogenicity ranking ingredients from 0 (non-comedogenic) to 5 (highly comedogenic).

Are all vegetable oils comedogenic?

No, it depends on vegetable oils. Some, such as coconut oil, can indeed clog the skin’s pores, but others, such as jojoba oil, are lightweight and non-comedogenic.

Are organic cosmetics less comedogenic?

No, there is no association between a cosmetic product’s organic status and its comedogenic potential.

Are sun creams comedogenic?

It depends on the sun creams. Today there are sun protection products with a lightweight texture that are non-comedogenic and suitable for oily or acne-prone skin.

Can an ingredient be comedogenic for one person but not for another?

Yes, the reaction depends on skin type and individual sensitivity.

Can a product acquire comedogenic properties over time?

Yes, this can occur if the product oxidises over time. This is particularly the case with certain vegetable oils rich in unsaturated fatty acids.

Does comedogenicity depend on concentration?

Yes, an ingredient can be problematic at high concentrations but neutral at low doses. The balance of the formulation also influences its behaviour on the skin. Comedogenicity is therefore not a fixed property.

Is the term ‘non-comedogenic’ regulated?

This claim is not strictly regulated. It is based on tests carried out in-house.

Is comedogenicity the same thing as occlusivity?

Not quite. An ingredient occlusive or film-forming reduces water loss by forming a film on the surface. This does not necessarily mean it clogs the pores.

Does comedogenicity exclusively affect the face?

This phenomenon may also affect the back, the torso or other areas rich in sebaceous glands.
