What is sweet almond oil?
This refers to a vegetable oil extracted from the fruits of the almond tree, a tree native to Central Asia, now primarily grown in the southern regions of France, from the Alpes Maritimes to the western Pyrenees, including Corsica. The almond tree is also cultivated in California. Its flowers are the first to appear at the end of winter, despite the morning frosts. To obtain 1 L of sweet almond oil, approximately 2 to 3 kg of almonds need to be cold pressed.
Sweet almond oil is identifiable by its pale yellow colour, subtle scent, and somewhat oily touch. This vegetable oil is packed with numerous benefits for the skin and hair. Used as a natural ingredient in certain beauty treatments, it goes by the I.N.C.I. name of "prunus amygdalus oil extract".
How is sweet almond oil obtained?
There exist two varieties of almond trees, one of which produces bitter fruits and the other, the almond, better known as the sweet almond. The fruit of the almond tree, which is green in colour, contains a seed called an almond. When the shell of the fruit is dry and begins to open, the seed can be extracted to produce sweet almond oil. This vegetable oil is obtained directly by cold pressing the seeds of the sweet almond.
The benefits of sweet almond oil in cosmetics.
Sweet almond oil, 100% natural, is rich in oleic acid (omega 9) as well as vitamins A, E and D, which are known to provide numerous benefits to the skin and hair.
The benefits of sweet almond oil for the skin
Thanks to its richness in essential fatty acids, sweet almond oil has moisturising and nourishing properties for the skin. The vegetable oil of sweet almond primarily containsoleic acidoromega 9, a monounsaturated fatty acid (62 to 86%). Oleic acid is a lipid that is part of the composition of sebum, a substance naturally secreted by the body to counteract skin and hair dryness. It stimulates the production of sebum by the sebaceous glands. Thus, sweet almond vegetable oil isrelipidating. Suitable for all skin types, it is particularly recommended for dry or irritated skin, and is perfectly suitable for the delicate skin of babies.
Sweet almond oil also aids the skin in protecting itself from external aggressions. It strengthens the hydrolipidic barrier and reduces chapping, the appearance of stretch marks and sunburn. Rich in Vitamin E, considered a natural antioxidant, sweet almond oil also helps to slow down the skin ageing process.
The benefits of sweet almond oil on hair
Sweet almond oil can provide benefits todry and brittle hair. Indeed, dry hair results from alack of sebum productionat the scalp level. This can stem from the use of a harsh treatment that denatures the structure of the hair fibre or from a decrease in cell activity with age. However, this lack of sebum can be compensated for by an intake of essential fatty acids. Composed mainly of omega 9 fatty acids, sweet almond oil can provide this intake. Moreover, hydrating the hair gives it flexibility and shine. In the case of curly hair, sweet almond oil helps to define the curls, while strengthening the elasticity of the hair fibres. Detangled, they are thus easier to style.
Regulated usage and dosage of sweet almond oil in skincare.
Unlike essential oils, vegetable oils are gentle and easy to handle. When it is 100% natural, sweet almond oil can be used undiluted on the skin and hair. As it has a greasy touch, a few drops are sufficient for application on the skin or hair. It is applied directly to the skin with a gentle massage.
Since it can be used in its pure form, there is no regulatory dosage to adhere to when incorporating it into a skincare formula. Acting as a skin maintenance agent, it can be used every day, morning and evening.
Are there any contraindications associated with the cosmetic use of sweet almond oil?
The cosmetic use of sweet almond vegetable oil posesno health risks and has no contraindications. Pregnant women and young children can use it safely. However, even though it is antioxidant, it is not a tanning oil. Do not apply this treatment before sun exposure.
Extracted from the seeds of nut fruits, sweet almond oil can nevertheless contain allergens. Therefore, it is advised not to use it in case of an allergy to nut fruits.
In all instances, if you have reactive and sensitive skin, it is recommended to perform a skin patch test beforehand. To do this, apply a small amount of undiluted pure oil to your wrist or the crook of your arm. If there is an adverse reaction within the following 24 hours, do not use this product.
