How is niacinamide produced?

Niacinamide is a multifunctional active ingredient increasingly found in skincare products. As an antioxidant, it combats premature ageing of the epidermis. Its sebum-regulating and antibacterial properties also make it an excellent ally for oily skin (+), whether or not it has blemishes. Here, we focus on the process of obtaining this ingredient.

Niacinamide, an active ingredient obtained synthetically.

With the empirical formula C6H5NO2, the niacinamide molecule, also known as nicotinamide, is a water-soluble derivative of vitamin B3. This active ingredient is synthesised in the laboratory, through a chemical reaction. This process involves the hydrolysis of a reactant, 3-cyanopyridine (with the empirical formula NCC5H4N) in a basic environment. In other words, the 3-cyanopyridine reacts with water in the presence of hydroxide ions (OH-) which act as catalysts (they accelerate the reaction and allow for a better yield). This is followed by a purification stage through ion exchange and the removal of water by evaporation. Then, the final product of the reaction, niacinamide, is isolated and dried by atomisation.

Our skincare products containing niacinamide.

At Typology, we have incorporated niacinamide into various formulations at different concentrations for optimal use, depending on the desired skin benefits:

  • To mattify shiny areas, effectively combat blemishes and refine the skin's texture, the unifying serum is an excellent product choice. It contains 12% niacinamide which also helps to restore the skin's barrier function. You can apply it morning and evening, on the face and neck after they have been thoroughly cleansed and dried;

  • By promoting micro-blood circulation, the high concentration of niacinamide (7%) in our unifying tonic reduces redness caused by blemishes. This skincare product also contains centifolia rose hydrosol, known for its soothing and refreshing properties, as well as a probiotic, the Lactococcus Ferment Lysate, which contributes to the maintenance of a healthy skin flora and to the protection of the skin;

  • The eye serum is enriched with decongesting active ingredients such as caffeine (5%) and niacinamide (5%). It helps to reduce the appearance of blue circles and bags under the eyes, for a brighter look;

  • Thetinted under-eye concealer is perfect for camouflaging dark circles in one stroke. It combines high coverage with a natural finish. Enriched with caffeine, niacinamide, and cornflower hydrosol, it reduces the appearance of under-eye bags over time. This concealer can also be used to correct blemishes for a smooth and even complexion;

  • The unifying cleansing gel isconcentrated with active ingredients to reduce redness associated with blemishes and even out the complexion while cleansing the skin of impurities. The gentle, plant-based surfactants that make up this gel are non-drying and cleanse the skin without damaging its hydrolipidic film. The skin is left feeling soft, supple and comfortable.
