The essential oil of rose geranium boasts numerous skin benefits, thanks to its purifying, antibacterial, and antifungal properties. But what about its effect on signs of ageing, particularly wrinkles? This article provides some answers.

Does geranium rose essential oil act against wrinkles?

Theessential oil of rose geranium, historically used for its fragrant properties, is today valued for its numerous skin benefits. Furthermore, it is possible that it acts against the acceleration of skin ageing, and more specifically against the appearance of wrinkles.

However, it is important to note that no scientific study has conducted experiments in vivo on the impact of rose geranium essential oil on wrinkles in particular.

Nevertheless, a study conducted by Petar D. MARIN has demonstrated a antioxidant effect of this oil. More specifically, they found that it was able to reduce and eliminate free radicals, and this activity was dose-dependent. It reduced free radicals by 50% at a concentration of 0.802 mg/mL of oil solution.

The free radicals are unstable species that are produced in response to oxidative stress (pollution, tobacco, UV rays, etc.). Once produced, these radicals will attack the DNA and the dermis, particularly the dermal fibres such as collagen and elastin, disrupting their structure. These fibres, essential for maintaining the skin's elasticity, will therefore be affected, leading to the early onset of signs of skin ageing: wrinkles, fine lines, dull complexion, less plump, less supple skin.

The essential oil of rose geranium then acts on free radicals by stabilising them through the transfer of a hydrogen atom, which neutralises them and prevents them from affecting the skin. Thus, we can quite reasonably suggest that the use of rose geranium essential oil could potentially reduce the appearance of wrinkles due to its antioxidant action.

Further studies are required to confirm these results.

Has glycolic acid found a new application in hair care? Known for its long-standing use in skincare for its exfoliating properties, this alpha hydroxy acid may also offer benefits for those with greasy hair. Whilst direct studies on its effects in this area are limited, its success in skincare applications suggests it could have potential for managing excess sebum production and improving scalp health.
