Phytokeratin: What is it?
Keratin is a sulphur-rich fibrous protein that forms the outermost layers of the epidermis and phaneres (nails, hair, and fur). Generally, the keratin used in cosmetics is of animal origin. At Typology, we have chosen to opt for a plant-based alternative: phytokeratin, referred to as Hydrolyzed Wheat Protein or Hydrolyzed Sweet Almond Protein on I.N.C.I. lists.
This is a fine beige powder composed of hydrolysed wheat or almond proteins, meaning they are broken down into smaller proteins that will thus have better penetration and interaction at the surface of the skin, hair, and nails. Phytokeratin is obtained through a enzymatic process.
Benefits of Phyto-Keratin for Nails.
The nail is a horny plate primarily composed of keratin but also of mineral salts (potassium, calcium...). During the growth of the nail, the keratinocytes present in the basal layer, inside the nail, gradually traverse the different layers to reach the surface. During their ascent, the keratinocytes become loaded with keratin.
Thus, theintroduction of phytokeratin (which has a structure very similar to natural keratin) to the nailstrengthens brittle, soft, and weakened nails. It helps to improve nail growth, their strength and protects them from external aggressions.
When should one use phytokeratin on the nails?
When the keratin present in our bodies breaks down, nails become weak and brittle. This can be due to internal factors such as stress, fatigue, ageing, illness or deficiencies. External causes can also weaken the nails such as DIY activities, household products (dishwashing liquid) or gardening. Moreover, the repeated use of nail polish (especially semi-permanent polish) and nail polish removers degrade the layers of keratin that make up the nail. Consequently, the nails become soft and brittle.
In such instances, it is necessary to reinforce the keratin, which constitutes approximately 90% of the nail structure. Applying phytokeratin to the nails will naturally strengthen the existing keratin therein.
Our Hand & Nail serum based on phytokeratin.
To care for your nails, we offer you a Hand & Nail Serum composed of 1% of phytokeratin and 2% of hyaluronic acid. It repairs and strengthens brittle and damaged nails. The addition of plant keratin supports the strength, resistance and growth of the nail. Hyaluronic acid and D-panthenol hydrate and repair the skin of the hands. In addition, this treatment contains biotin which contributes to the strengthening of the nail, helps to thicken the cuticles and prevent breakage.
Apply 3 to 4 drops of the plant keratin serum to your hands and nails morning and evening. Massage the nails and cuticles until the serum has fully absorbed into the skin and nails. You may also choose to add two to three drops of the keratin serum into a dollop of your regular hand moisturiser.
