The emergence of dark circles and bags under the eyes is a common issue affecting many individuals. Known for its hydrating and antioxidant properties, it appears that aloe vera gel may also have a beneficial effect on the eye contour. Discover whether this ingredient truly helps combat dark circles and under-eye bags.
Aloe vera and eye contour: an ally against dark circles and bags?
Aloe vera gel to combat dark circles and bags under the eyes.
Aloe vera gel is a valuable ally for reducing dark circles and bags under the eyes. It primarily helps to regulate microcirculation of the blood. Several studies have highlighted a vasoconstrictive effect of aloe vera gel, although the exact mechanism involved has not been explicitly defined. It is also suggested that the minerals in the gel could provide elasticity to red blood cells, which would make the blood more fluid: this would then circulate better within the body. These properties are beneficial for individuals with bluish dark circles, which are caused by poor blood circulation.
However, it should be noted that if dark circles are of hereditary origin, it is impossible to diminish them.
Furthermore, aloe vera gel has a tightening effect on the skin. This property is beneficial for delaying the onset of fatty pockets and hollow dark circles, making aloe vera a preventive solution to these issues. Glucomannan, a polysaccharide that forms part of the gel's composition, influences the fibroblast growth factor, TGF-β1, and stimulates cellular activity and proliferation. As fibroblasts are responsible for the production of collagen and elastin, the synthesis of these molecules is increased. They contribute to the preservation of the skin's structure, as well as its suppleness and elasticity. Strengthening these fibres thus helps to slow down the process of fatty tissue slippage, which leads to the formation of bags.
Aloe vera gel also possesses antioxidant properties, which allows it to delay cellular ageing. Indeed, it boosts the production of metallothioneins, proteins that increase the resistance of cellular tissues to oxidative stress. Moreover, it contains vitamins A, C and E which are antioxidants capable of neutralising free radicals.
How is aloe vera gel applied?
Applying a treatment locally based on aloe vera gel or pure aloe vera gel can help reduce dark circles and puffiness, and allows you to benefit from all its effects on the eye contour. Being non-photosensitising, it can be used morning and evening and poses no risk to pregnant or breastfeeding women.
Aloe vera gel is suitable for all skin types. To reduce the appearance of dark circles or bags, a small amount can be applied twice daily around the eyes. Then massage the area until the product is fully absorbed. This action also stimulates blood and lymphatic circulation, and has a draining effect. A reduction in non-hereditary dark circles can generally be observed after 4 weeks.
For enhanced effectiveness, aloe vera gel can be combined withhyaluronic acid.
