How to alleviate pain during menstruation?

For a significant number of women, menstrual pains can be a real ordeal. Where do these unpleasant sensations come from? Do they serve a purpose? And most importantly: what can we do to alleviate their effects? Here are some answers...

Why do we experience abdominal pain during menstruation?

Also known as menstrual cramps, these abdominal pains can sometimes interfere with quality of life during the first week of the menstrual cycle. These lower abdominal pains are caused by molecules that assist the uterine lining in detaching during menstruation: prostaglandins. These substances cause the uterus to contract, facilitating the detachment and expulsion of the lining. Prostaglandins are therefore essential but can, if in excess, cause uterine cramps, in the same way that an overworked muscle can suffer from cramps. Most of the time, the pains are intense during the first periods and then diminish over the years. If, on the contrary, the pains intensify over time, another cause may be suspected, such as endometriosis.

Techniques to alleviate them.

Heat has a very beneficial effect on menstrual pain. Therefore, do not hesitate to use a hot water bottle, especially at night. Indeed, heat has the effect of dilating blood vessels and relaxing muscles, thus alleviating uterine cramps. If necessary, you can supplement these techniques with painkillers, taking care to seek advice from your doctor or pharmacist. However, avoid aspirin which thins the blood and therefore may intensify your period. Furthermore, do not hesitate to keep moving. Being active helps to combat pain.
