Durée d'une purge de la peau.

Skin detox: how long does it last?

Often mistaken for a skin rash, skin purging occurs after the use of certain active ingredients. Let's review everything you need to know about this phenomenon: origin, duration, solutions, prevention.

Skin purging, what is it?

After using a specific new ingredient for the first time, particularly exfoliating and keratoplastic agents, you may notice the emergence of microcomedones on the surface of your skin overnight: this is a purging phenomenon. The theory is that these treatments "purge" the skin of impurities that can clog the pores deep down by quickly bringing them to the surface. Although it can affect all skin types, it is often observed on skin prone to blemishes.

Stimulated by the application of active ingredients, dead cells detach from the epidermis and the process of cellular renewal accelerates, thus propelling imperfections to the surface more quickly. It is often perceived as a phase where the skin initially appears less attractive before improving and achieving a clearer complexion, by eliminating blackheads.

How long does a skin purge last?

Similar to the skin's regeneration cycle, the purge lasts on average 4 weeks, but can extend up to 8 weeks. The active ingredients in skincare products "work" on the skin for at least a month before delivering the desired effects. However, if you still notice more imperfections after this period, it may not be a purge but likely the result of other factors (medications, hormones...) or an adverse reaction to skincare products.

What measures should be taken when the skin is detoxifying?

When the skin undergoes the purging process, it is crucial to maintain a skincare routine. Here are some tips for taking care of your skin during this particular phase.

  • Continue to apply the treatments. You may be tempted to stop using the treatments, but it is better to persist despite the difficulties they cause. Once cellular renewal is complete, you will notice all the benefits that the formula has brought to your skin. Moreover, what you see on the surface would probably have appeared at some point or another or would have remained embedded in the pores, potentially leading to cystic acne in the long run.

  • Avoid touching or popping pimples. As tempting as it may be, refrain from picking at your spots to prevent causing inflammation or even leaving scars.

  • Avoid adding treatments that dry out the skin. When you use exfoliating or keratoplastic agents, avoid anything that can cause skin dryness. On the contrary, hydrate your skin as best you can with a treatment suitable for your skin type. Dehydrated skin will increase sebum production and may therefore exacerbate imperfections.

  • Protecting your skin from the sun. Remember to apply a sunscreen every day to avoid exacerbating the situation, especially if you are using treatments containing AHA and retinol.

Can we prevent a skin purging episode?

If you plan to use new skincare products and wish to prevent a potential purge, it is recommended to introduce them gradually to allow your skin time to adjust. Start by incorporating one, then wait several days before adding another.

Furthermore, the optimal approach is to start gradually, for instance by applying the treatment twice a week for a month, then transitioning to every other evening until reaching daily use or as per the manufacturer's instructions. This will allow the skin to slowly adapt to the ingredients.
