Originating from central Mexico, this cactus, characterised by its unique profile and organisation into cladodes (or pads), was introduced to the Old World in the 16th century where it particularly acclimatised to the Mediterranean region. Today, it is cultivated for its fruits, the prickly pears, and the young edible cladodes (nopalitos) and their numerous culinary and medicinal uses, discovered by the Mesoamerican peoples as early as the 16th century.
