Baobab oil to help treat psoriasis?
Psoriasis: What is it?
Psoriasis results from accelerated skin renewal at an abnormal rate. It is a chronic inflammatory skin disorder characterised by accelerated skin cell proliferation leading to thick, red, scaly plaques covered with whitish dead cells. Although the precise mechanisms of this autoimmune condition remain unclear, it is thought that genetic and environmental factors interact to trigger the immune system, causing excessive inflammation.
Psoriasis can affect any part of the body, but it is more common on the scalp, neck, elbows, lower back, knees and hands. Its course involves flare-ups of unpredictable frequency and intensity. This skin condition progresses intermittently with phases of remission. Beyond physical signs, psoriasis can have a significant psychological impact, affecting the quality of life of those affected. Although there is no definitive cure, various medical treatments and natural approaches can relieve symptoms and help manage this chronic skin condition.
Can baobab vegetable oil help manage psoriasis?
Psoriasis is a chronic skin condition affecting millions worldwide and resists effective treatment. In this search for alternatives, thebaobab oil, obtained by cold pressing African baobab seeds, has attracted growing interest. This vegetable oil is used in skincare and haircare formulations for its many benefits. Among these, it is suggested as a natural alternative to relieve psoriasis symptoms.
At present, no scientific evidence shows baobab seed oil has a direct impact on psoriasis development or progression. The oil does however have a composition rich in micronutrients that allow it to exert properties that may benefit psoriasis.
Anti-inflammatory properties and impact on psoriatic inflammation:
Research has been conducted on the anti-inflammatory properties of baobab oil. Several studies indicate that its fatty acids—omega-3, plant sterols and triterpenes—can reduce skin inflammation. Psoriasis is a condition marked by chronic inflammation. The anti-inflammatory properties of baobab oil may reduce associated redness and swelling.
Moisturising properties and skin barrier protection:
The hydrating effect of baobab oil has been demonstrated in several scientific studies. Baobab oil acts as an effective skin hydrator, penetrating the various layers of the epidermis to restore deep hydration and prevent flaking. The essential fatty acids in baobab oil help maintain optimal hydration levels and protect the hydrolipidic film. For individuals with psoriasis, this property may help reduce skin dryness, soothe irritation and relieve itching, potentially improving patients’ quality of life.
Baobab oil may help soothe psoriasis symptoms. However, consulting a doctor for appropriate medical treatment in case of psoriasis is necessary, as baobab oil cannot replace it.
Directions for use:
For optimal use of baobab oil in psoriasis management, apply a small amount—for example, a few drops—to the entire body and affected areas. After application, massage using small circular movements to ensure absorption. The oil can also be mixed with a soothing cream to combine effects.
