Triclosan

INCI name:   Triclosan.

Function:   Antimicrobial, preservative, deodorant.

Origin:   Synthetic.

Concentration allowed by the EU regulation:   Up to 0.3% in toothpastes, hand soaps, body soaps/shower gels, deodorants (other than spray), face powders and foundations, nail products intended for cleaning fingernails and toenails prior to the application of artificial nail preparations; Up to 0.2% in mouthwash.

Where to find it / Where they are found?:   Toothpastes, deodorant sticks and sprays, foot creams, toilet milks, liquid hand soaps, eye shadows, masks, shampoos, facial cleansers are products that contain triclosan.

Health risks:   Suspected endocrine disruptor, suspected carcinogen, potential skin and eye irritant, potential allergen.

Environmental risks:   Bioaccumulative substance, non-biodegradable substance, aquatic ecotoxicity, persistent substance.

Additional information:   Suspected of being contaminated by dioxins (formed following the degradation of triclosan with chlorine contained in tap water and exposure to UV rays).
