Profile: Nummular Psoriasis

Definition:   A form of psoriasis characterised by the emergence of small, discoid red lesions a few centimetres in diameter, whose size and shape are reminiscent of coins, hence the term "nummular", associated with often intense itching. These plaques can be located in various parts of the body (legs, arms, etc.). The rounded shape of the plaques in nummular psoriasis can suggest certain fungal infections (dermatophytosis for example) or nummular eczema.

Internal and external causes:   Failure of the immune system.

How to reduce or eliminate them:   Prescription of local corticosteroid treatments (cream, ointment, lotion) to be combined with the daily application of moisturising cream; use of care products containing keratolytic active ingredients; phototherapy; intake of anti-inflammatory, anti-proliferative and immunosuppressive agents (acitretin, methotrexate, cyclosporine, etc.).
