Profile: Psoriasis of the Mucous Membranes
Definition:
A relatively rare form of psoriasis affecting the mucous membranes, namely the tongue, lips, inside of the cheeks, and genital areas (glans and vulva). In the case of oral psoriasis, it manifests as slightly thickened, whitish areas. In the case of genital psoriasis, well-defined, non-scaling red patches are observed, which may be associated with itching, burning sensations, and pain during sexual intercourse.
Internal and external causes:
Genetic predisposition; fungal infection (candidiasis); leukoplakia.
How to reduce or eliminate:
Topical application of potent class 3 dermocorticoids (methylprednisolone aceponate, halometasone, etc.) on genital lesions; prescription of medicinal treatments based on biological ingredients (oral corticosteroids, cyclosporine, methotrexate, acitretin and apremilast).
