Profile: Swollen Feet

Definition:   Foot trauma characterised by swelling due to water retention and an increase in pressure on the veins of fluid within the body's tissues.

Internal and external causes:   Vein insufficiency, infection, accumulation of lymphatic fluid, blood clots, side effects of certain medications, ankle injury (sprain).

How to reduce or eliminate them:   Wearing compression stockings; using an ice pack or compression bandage; consulting a doctor

Preventive measures:   Reduce salt intake; elevate the feet (above the chest level); drink sufficient water.
