Profile: Split Nails

Definition:   A nail characterised by a change in nail texture and the formation of a vertical crack along the tip of the nail, splitting it in two, as a result of tension exerted on the nail.

Internal and external causes:   Long-term exposure to moisture, nail biting, fungal or bacterial infections, certain diseases (such as psoriasis), and nutritional deficiencies (zinc, biotin, iron).

How to reduce or eliminate them:   Trimming the nail slit that extends beyond the nail bed; application of a self-adhesive silk film; use of a lotion containing alpha-hydroxy acid or lanolin; prescription of an antifungal medication; intake of dietary supplements.

Preventive measures:   Wear protective gloves when doing household chores; avoid biting or tearing your nails; apply a moisturising treatment to your nails and cuticles; use nail hardening products.
