Identity Profile: Haematomas (Bruises)
Definition:
A dark blue or black mark, typically harmless, accompanied by swelling, discolouration, pain, and warmth. This is due to a leakage and accumulation of blood under the skin following the rupture of blood vessel walls. There are different types of haematomas depending on the specific part of the body where it forms: septal haematoma, auricular haematoma, intracranial haematoma, abdominal haematoma, subcutaneous haematoma, subungual haematoma, and intramuscular haematoma.
Internal and external causes:
Forceful impact in the affected area, cranial trauma.
How to reduce or eliminate:
Apply an ice pack wrapped in a towel for 15 minutes several times a day; take painkillers to alleviate pain and swelling (avoid aspirin); perform surgical drainage; carry out a craniotomy (intracranial haematoma).
Preventative steps to take:
Exercise caution when engaging in an activity; avoid falls.
