Profile: Boils

Definition:   A red, sensitive, hard and painful spot filled with pus, which is caused by the inflammation of a hair follicle or a sweat gland. After 4 to 7 days, the lump begins to soften and whiten as pus accumulates under the skin. Contagious, the boil usually disappears on its own after about 10 days. It can appear on any part of the body, but the most common places are the face, neck, armpits, shoulders and buttocks. If numerous boils form together, it is a more serious infection and this is what is referred to as a "carbuncle".

Internal and external causes:   Little-known cause; carrier of the Staphylococcus aureus bacteria on the surface of their skin; immunosuppressive diseases (HIV, diabetes, etc.).

How to reduce or eliminate them:   Do not attempt to burst it; apply a warm compress several times a day; consult a doctor; use an antibacterial soap; apply a topical antiseptic before covering with a gauze or bandage; take oral antibiotics; undergo a surgical incision and drainage under local anaesthesia.

Preventive measures:   Cleaning and treating minor skin injuries; washing daily, once a day
