Profile: Corns
Definition:
A thick, rough, shallow, hard and yellowish mass of the epidermis that most commonly appears under the foot, particularly at the heel or under the toe, although they can develop on any part of the body that is subjected to regular friction (fingertips, palms of the hands, etc.). This hardening of the skin corresponds to a defence mechanism of the affected area with an increased production of keratin.
Internal and external causes:
Repeated pressure or friction applied to the skin.
How to reduce or eliminate:
Consult a doctor; gently sand the area after softening it (either by running it under water or applying a moisturising cream); apply keratolytic or corn-removing medications in the form of an ointment or paste (salicylic acid).
Preventative steps to take:
Wear soft and wide shoes; put on socks; use protective insole inserts; utilise padded gloves.
