What is the difference between a superfatted soap and a cleansing gel?
Superfatted soap and cleansing gel are two types of skin cleansers, but their composition and mode of action differ. The superfatted soap is a soap enriched with superfatting agents, such as vegetable oils or butters, incorporated to offset the sometimes drying effect of washing. Thanks to these additional lipids, it helps to preserve the skin's natural hydrolipidic film, an emulsion composed of sebum, sweat and water. Most superfatted soaps are formulated at the skin's physiological pH, another characteristic explaining their gentleness and their ability to protect the skin barrier. We then speak of dermatological soap, or syndet, for synthetic detergent.
The cleansing gel, on the other hand, comes in a fluid or gel-like texture and contains mild surfactants that remove impurities and excess sebum. This type of cleanser is known for its effectiveness. Some cleansing gels are specifically designed for oily skin and contain purifying active ingredients, such as zinc or salicylic acid, to combat overproduction of sebum. Other versions, more hydrating, contain glycerin and aloe vera and are suitable for sensitive skin.
How does one choose between superfatted soap and cleansing gel?
The cleansing gel and superfatted soap each have specific benefits for the skin. The choice between these two formulas primarily depends on the product's texture and your skin type.
Based on the texture:
The superfatted soap comes in a solid form that, when in contact with water, develops a soft and creamy lather. Its composition includes superfatting agents, such as vegetable oils or butters, which leave a light protective film on the skin after rinsing. This nourishing texture is particularly suitable for those seeking an immediate comfort sensation and supple skin after cleansing. The cleansing gel, on the other hand, has a fluid and aqueous texture, which often transforms into a fine lather during application. Lighter than the superfatted soap, it rinses off easily without leaving any residue on the skin. It provides an immediate freshness sensation and is suitable for those who prefer a quick cleanse and a clean skin feeling after rinsing.
Depending on the skin type:
Cleansing gels are typically formulated for combination to oily skin types, prone to blemishes and excess sebum. Thanks to their predominantly water-based composition, they cleanse the skin deeply and help to unclog pores, without leaving a greasy film. Superfatted soaps are more recommended for dry skin, sensitive or atopic, which require a gentle and hydrating cleanse. Enriched with nourishing agents, it helps to preserve the hydrolipidic film and reduces the feeling of tightness after washing. Superfatted soap is particularly ideal for winter periods or for people living in environments where the water is very hard.
The choice between a superfatted soap and a cleansing gel depends not only on your skin type but also on your preference for texture and the feeling after cleansing.

At Typology, we have developed a selection of facial cleansers with varying textures for each skin typology, suitable for daily use, morning and evening.
Exfoliating Cleansing Gel : This foaming gel is a micro-exfoliant that can be used daily or occasionally for deep cleansing. It helps to prevent and correct blemishes, without damaging the skin barrier and leaving the skin soft and even. Sulfate-free, the exfoliating cleansing gel transforms into a light and airy foam upon contact with water thanks to its gentle and plant-derived surfactants (coco-glucoside and coco-betaine). It also contains gluconolactone (PHA) to gently exfoliate the skin and stimulate cell renewal, aloe vera, known for its moisturising properties, inulin to rebalance the microbiota, and sweet orange essential oil, which combats the bacteria responsible for blemishes.
Purifying Cleansing Gel : Specifically formulated for combination to oily skin types, this cleansing gel aids in deeply purifying the skin without causing harm or dryness. It combines bamboo extract and zinc PCA, to regulate excess sebum and reduce the skin's shiny appearance, while unclogging and tightening the pores. The purifying cleansing gel also contains inulin to protect and balance the skin's microbiota and eucalyptus globulus essential oil, known for its antibacterial properties.
Our cleansing gels are formulated with moisturising agents, such as glycerine or pentylene glycol, to avoid weakening the skin and to prevent a rebound effect and increased sebum production.
Lipid-Enriched Cleansing Bar : This care product, formulated at a neutral pH, is suitable for sensitive and atopic skin and gently cleanses the skin of the whole family, without dehydrating or irritating it. It contains 95% natural origin ingredients, including calendula extract, known for its soothing and regenerative properties, sweet almond oil, which softens and nourishes, and shea butter, a significant source of lipids that restores the skin barrier.
