Squalane is a hydrocarbon active ingredient derived from squalene, a lipid naturally present in human sebum. Its excellent affinity with the skin and its high stability against oxidation makes it a compound of choice in formulations. As for its benefits, it is particularly renowned for its powerful hydrating capabilities.

What is squalane?
The squalane is the hydrogenated form of squalene, a lipid produced by skin cells that accounts for 14 to 16% of the total composition of sebum. Being liposoluble, it can be added to skin or hair care products consisting of an oily monophase or an oily phase combined with an aqueous phase. Moreover, squalane is colourless, odourless, but its main advantage lies in its non-comedogenicity, meaning it does not clog pores and does not cause imperfections. This stable and saturated hydrocarbon is appreciated for its sensory qualities. It is both light to the touch and silky. Furthermore, it is biocompatible with the skin and therefore non-irritating. Squalane can be introduced into a product at a concentration ranging from 0.5 to 100% in total harmlessness.
Squalane and its hydrating power.
Squalane is a non-greasy oil with a dry touch that rapidly penetrates the epidermis.Itis often referred to as anactive emollient. Not only does it soften the skin, but it also prevents the epidermis from dehydrating. Its biomimetic structure with the sebum helps to repair the hydrolipidic film, thereby strengthening the skin's barrier function and preventing the body's water from evaporating. The skin remains hydrated for longer and the feelings of tightness associated with dry skin are reduced.
Furthermore, squalene is a component of sebum, the natural production of which by skin cells tends to decrease around the age of 30. This decline contributes to increased dehydration and the skin showing more "signs" of ageing. Therefore, a daily intake of squalane helps to combat this inevitable loss and slows down the skin dehydration process that intensifies over the years.
