Originating from the Middle East (Iran), the Damask rose is considered an ancient and precious variety of rose, boasting 30 petals. Indeed, the Damask rose bush is a plant derived from the wild rose Rosa canina. The Damask rose does not tolerate heat and therefore must be cultivated at high altitudes. It appears that the crude distillation of roses to obtain essential oil emerged at the end of the 7th century AD, and spread to the provinces later in the 14th century. Iran was the main producer of rose essential oil until the 16th century and exported it worldwide. For the aromatic essence of the Damask rose essential oil to be at its highest level, the flowers are hand-harvested each year between May and June early in the morning. It takes 4 tonnes of petals to yield 1 kg of essential oil. Moreover, to best bring out its aromatic essence, the Damask rose must undergo a double distillation. The final essential oil is a skilful blend of 1/3 to 1/5 direct/indirect essence.
