Utilisation baume à lèvres par les hommes.

Should a lip balm be used when one is a man?

Taking care of one's lips, particularly by applying a lip balm, is often perceived as a feminine act. However, one could presumably think that men, just like women, could benefit from a lip balm. So, should men incorporate a lip balm into their routine? Let's explore this question together.

Should men also use lip balm?

Many men still associate lip care with a practice that is purely feminine. This perception, coupled with the desire to conform to gender norm pressures, is usually the reason for their reluctance towards lip balms. Moreover, some hesitate to apply a treatment as they fear it may create a shiny effect on their lips, likely to draw attention. This mistrust is often amplified by men's lack of information about skin needs, particularly those of the lips. However, this cultural rejection of lip balm is not based on any biological foundation. Men's lips share the same vulnerability as women's to external aggressions, such as wind, cold or UV rays.

Indeed, whether it's the lips of men or women, this part of the body does not produce sweat and virtually no sebum, which deprives them of the protective barrier that the rest of the skin uses to retain moisture and defend against external elements. Furthermore, the lips are very thin, about five times more so than the rest of the face, which intensifies their fragility and their need for hydration.

Note : However, it is true that the skin of men differs from that of women. Thicker and often oilier due to sebaceous activity stimulated by testosterone, it is generally better protected from external aggressions. However, these differences are not sufficient when it comes to the lips which, as previously explained, are particularly vulnerable.

Without appropriate care, the lips of both men and women can quickly become dry, chapped, and painful, especially during winter when the cold and wind can be very intense.

Applying a lip balm is a simple solution to dryness and chapping, regardless of whether you are a man or a woman. This treatment acts as a protective barrier by compensating for the lack of sebum, as well as moisturising and nourishing the delicate skin of the lips. Moreover, contrary to popular belief, many products are designed to be discreet and neutral, with a non-sticky texture and a matte finish, making them imperceptible once applied. Finally, lip balms not only prevent the discomfort associated with chapped lips, but also improve the appearance of the lips, which can be a significant advantage in social or professional interactions.

The use of a lip balm is not exclusive to women and can provide comfort to men's lips.
