Profile: Brittle Nails

Definition:   Nails that tend to break or split. This issue stems from a lack of hydration in the nails or the fact that the keratin has become weakened.

Internal and external causes:   Aging process; constant hand sanitisation; Raynaud's syndrome; cancer treatments (chemotherapy, targeted therapies, etc.); thyroid disorders (hypothyroidism and hyperthyroidism); nutritional deficiencies (iron, silicon, zinc, biotin, etc.); skin conditions (eczema, psoriasis); overuse of traditional nail polish, semi-permanent polish; regular application of artificial nails (acrylic or gel); use of chemical products without protection (detergents); exposure to cold and dry air; trauma to the nail-forming tissues; excessive polishing of the nail plate; hormonal changes (menopause); exposure to excessive or insufficient moisture (frequent hand washing and drying, living in a humid environment, etc.).

How to reduce or eliminate them:   Apply a daily strengthener to restructure the nail (keratin, silicon, etc.); supplement with biotin; consult a doctor.

Preventive measures:   Wearing gloves for household chores and in cold weather; spacing out or even stopping the application of artificial nails; regularly filing one's nails; applying a topical moisturising treatment to the hands and nails after each wash; regularly massaging one's nails with a strengthening treatment; keeping one's nails short; maintaining a balanced diet.
