Organic/chemical filters

Organic filters, often referred to as chemical filters, are molecules used in sunscreen products to absorb ultraviolet radiation. After absorption, the energy of the UV rays is converted into a less harmful form of energy, generally heat. In this way, they help to reduce the effects of solar radiation on the skin.
FAQ about organic/chemical filters

How does an organic sunscreen filter work?

An organic sunscreen filter is a molecule capable of absorbing ultraviolet radiation. After absorption, the energy is converted into heat, which helps to limit the impact of UV on the skin.

Are chemical filters harmful to the skin?

Not all chemical filters have a bad reputation. Diethylhexyl butamido triazone, or iscotrizinol, and phenylbenzimidazole sulfonic acid, or ensulizole, are completely safe for the skin.

Do organic filters protect against UVA and UVB rays?

Some filters primarily target UVB radiation, while others absorb more UVA. Cosmetic products often combine several filters in order to achieve broad-spectrum protection.

Do chemical filters penetrate the skin?

Certain filters can partially penetrate the stratum corneum. However, their systemic absorption remains low at the concentrations used in cosmetic products.

Are chemical filters photostable?

Photostability varies between molecules. Certain chemical filters can indeed degrade under the effect of UV radiation, such as avobenzone.

Can chemical filters be used on sensitive skin?

Certain types of sensitive skin may react to organic filters. In such cases, formulas using mineral filters may be more appropriate.

Are chemical filters effective against skin ageing?

By protecting the skin against the sun’s rays, chemical sun filters help to limit the effects of photoageing. Regular sun protection is a key element in preventing sun-related damage.

Are chemical filters suitable for children?

In general, it is preferable to use mineral sunscreen filters to protect children. That said, it must be stressed that it is essential not to expose children to the sun.

Are organic filters stable in water?

This depends on the organic filters and the formulation. If you are planning to swim, give preference to water‑resistant (“waterproof”) products, and remember to reapply your sunscreen after each swim.

Do chemical filters leave a visible film on the skin?

Unlike some mineral filters, organic filters are generally invisible on the skin, regardless of the phototype.
