Before or after shampooing: when is the optimal time to apply a hair mask?

The hair mask is merely one of many hair care products However, its demand continues to grow, now occupying a central place in modern hair care routines as hair is subjected daily to various stressors (heated styling tools, UV rays, pollution, frequent washing or chemical treatments, etc.) that cause damage. Applying a hair mask may appear simple, but there are subtle nuances to consider—particularly regarding the timing of its application within a hair care regimen. This is what we shall endeavour to address in this article.

What is the function of a hair mask?

Hair is constantly exposed to mechanical, chemical or thermal stressors, liable to altering its structure and shine. However, being composed of dead cells, they cannot regenerate biologically. The only way to restore their properties is therefore to act physically on the fibre by means of specific treatments. It is in this context that hair masks find their primary use.

Very similar to so-called instant conditioners, the hair masks are deep treatments with a thicker texture and a formulation more concentrated in active ingredients. Presented in emulsion form for optimal effect, they penetrate more deeply into the fibre and act over a prolonged period, this which significantly influences the quality and appearance of the hair. Particularly suited to dry or damaged hair, these intensive treatments revitalise the hair fibre by leaving it in place for longer compared with that of a standard conditioner, before being thoroughly rinsed out with water.

How does a hair mask work?

Most hair masks are formulated with a blend of several families of active ingredients to optimise their efficacy : cationic conditioning agents, lipids/fatty alcohols, film-forming agents and hydrolysed proteins.

  • The cationic surfactants attach to the damaged areas of the fibre, which are naturally negatively charged. Their positive charge establishes an electrostatic interaction that forms a smoothing protective film, reduces static electricity, eases detangling and enhances shine.

  • The lipids, fatty alcohols and film-forming agents restore the external lipid layer of the hair shaft. They lubricate the hair surface, reduce friction between fibres and enhance light reflection, thereby improving shine and softness. They also help to maintain hydration in the cortex.

  • The proteins hydrolysed penetrate the fibre and temporarily fill the micro-cracks in the cuticle, thereby enhancing the hair’s mechanical strength and reducing breakage.

IngredientsRolesExamples

Film-forming polymersTo cover or fill the damaged surface of the cuticleSynthetic polymers (silicones, polyvinylpyrrolidone, polyacrylates, etc.), natural polymers (vegetable oils, vegetable butters, vegetable waxes, cellulose, starch, etc.), gums, fatty alcohols (cetyl alcohol, stearyl alcohol), etc.

When is the optimal time to apply a hair mask?

Beyond its formulation and the specific instructions for use, the efficacy of a hair mask also depends on the timing of its application.

Hair care routine: at what stage should a hair mask be applied?

It is more common to apply a mask after shampooing, on damp but not soaking wet hair.

It is recommended for most hair masks to always wash the hair before applying them in order to remove residues that could undermine the product’s efficacy. They are also used after chemical treatments such as colouring and straightening. However, some hair masks – particularly those based on clay – are applied before shampooing, directly to the scalp.

How frequently should one apply a hair mask?

There is no universal frequency: it all depends on hair type, degree of damage and the type of mask selected (rinse-out or leave-in). It is therefore essential to follow the instructions precisely. However, in most cases hair masks are applied less frequently than conditioners, which are used at each wash cycle. As a general rule, they are used once a week for routine maintenance.

Although these guidelines are general, your hair is unique and may therefore require more or less frequent application. Usage should thus be adjusted accordingly. An application that is too frequent can weigh down the hair and render it oily, which would be counterproductive, whereas too infrequent an application risks leaving the hair dry and brittle. In all cases, refer always to the product instructions to ensure optimal usage and achieve the best results.
