Folliculitis

Definition: A contagious skin condition characterised by itchy spots that can cause discomfort. They appear anywhere there is hair, with the exception of the lips, palms of the hands, and soles of the feet. There are two main types of folliculitis: superficial folliculitis, when only part of the hair follicle is damaged, and deep folliculitis, when the entire follicle is damaged. Within these two categories, there are several subtypes, such as bacterial folliculitis which is the most common, pseudomonas folliculitis which is contracted in a swimming pool or hot tub where the pH or chlorine level is not balanced, pityrosporum folliculitis, etc. If it's a simple case, the skin should begin to improve within 7 to 10 days.
Internal and external causes: Skin infection (usually staphylococci); obstruction of the hair follicle; ingrown hairs; shaving/hair removal.
How to reduce or eliminate: Consulting a doctor; prescription of antibacterial/antifungal gels, creams or lotions; drainage of the infected follicle through incision; use of steroids
Preventative steps to take: Employ alternative shaving methods, such as electric shaving, laser hair removal, or depilatory creams; use a new blade for each shave; shave in the direction of hair growth; shave every other day; limit the use of oils and other greasy skin products; avoid clothing that irritates the skin or traps heat and sweat; ensure the cleanliness of the hot tub before immersing yourself.
