Examples of ingredients:   Butylparaben, Ethylparaben, Methylparaben, Propylparaben, Sodium Butylparaben, Sodium Propylparaben, Potassium Butylparaben, Potassium Propylparaben Sodium Isobutylparaben, Sodium Methylparaben, Isobutylparaben, Isopropylparaben, Sodium Ethylparaben, Sodium Paraben.

Function:   Masking agent, preservative, perfuming agent, antimicrobial.

Origin:   Synthetic.

Concentration allowed by the EU regulation:   Up to 0.4% (in parahydroxybenzoic acid) for an ester and 0.8% (in parahydroxybenzoic acid) for mixtures of esters in finished cosmetic products.

Where to find it / Where they are found?:   Compact/free powders, complexion correctors, blushes, mascaras, foundations, hair masks, lip balms, deodorants, sun sprays/mists/sprays, conditioners, facial moisturizers, bronzing powders, eyeshadows, lipsticks, shampoos, eyeliners, face masks, hair waxes/mousses/gels, hairsprays, eyelash and eyebrow serums, body creams, micellar waters, hair dyes, toothpastes, shower gels, nourishing hand creams, superfatted dermatological soaps.

Health risks:   Suspected endocrine disruptor, potential skin irritant, potential allergen.

Environmental risks:   Polluting manufacturing process (from petrochemicals).

Additional information:   Prohibited in non-rinse products intended for children under 3 years. Ethylparaben is also used as a food additive (E214).
